We have a machine at work that takes 3D assemblies of either castings, machined or sheet metal parts or any 3d object, and it tells you all the dimensions,degrees, helixes and tangencies of the entire part. Then it will recreate the part on cad, then you can machine it or fabricate it. However this is truly amazing where it takes the part for you and makes it out of plastic, so you can check fit and function before you spend a lot of money on machining time. Very cool.
