Another skirt question

Recommended Posts

I'm just trying to learn a few things before I get into the skirt making process.I like the skirts tied with wire,so how do you hold the skirt in place while tieing.I have retied a few that were still on but about to break but not without a rubber keeper. And also if I use the rubber keepers do the clear ones with the rattle holders on each side melt like the others.I have some older jigs with them and they still look pretty new. Thanks for any help.....Rob

I find the easiest way is to tie with wire is to first put the rubber collar on the skirt tabs like you would normally. Now slide the skirt on, but don't put the rubber collar all the way on the coller holder of the jig/spinnerbati. This will keep the strands togeter to tie the wire. Now slide the collar off the hook. There are other threads that cover this topic in greater detail, and go into thread vs wire, wire guage, etc.

I'm not an expert by any means, but I'll try and give some advice .... after all .... I've asked, and received plenty of this forum.

The standard skirt grommets are made of latex rubber, therefore a lot of them dry rot rather rapidly. The rattle bands seem to be made of a lil' more ridgid rubber and truly out last the latex style.

As far as hand tying,I have not been doing this very long and mostly use skirts with grommets already in place and just remove the grommet after tying. But I have tied quite a few mop style jigs with heavy rubber mixed with silicone.... I do these a couple different ways.

1st technique....I have a small slit cut into my work bench that measures to about 1 1/2".I place my precut wire (slightly pre bent) into this slot.I then take a tab of heavy rubber skirt material (cut to length) and place it across the wire, and then I lay my silicone stands (cut to length) onto the tab, then I take my jig head and place it on top of the skirt material. After positioning the head and skirt material where I want them I just pull the pre cut wire that is slightly bent strait up on each side.

At this point every thing is positioned and secure enough so that I can pick the jig up and complete the wrap (2 wraps around collar). After the initial loose wrap, while holding the jig in my weakest hand (left) I just pull the wire ends upward (one side at a time) with small flat pliers .... twist until tight and snip and bend.

2nd technique .... same as first except lay silicone across wire before applying the rubber tab.

This technique works well with all silicone or all rubber also.

Hope this helps and was not very confusing, good luck.

The way I do the skirts is usually with 2 silicone and 1/2 tab of living rubber. I wrap thread around the jig throat, put the rubber on, wrap a couple of wraps, place the first silicone skirt where I want it, wrap a little more thread, place the second silicone tab and wrap a little more thread.

That gives me exact control over where everything is going to be. Then I wrap the wire, cut off the ends and finally, cut off the thread.

My process sounds more cumbersome than it actually is.

Thats what I do also.
