The soft plastic bait industry is way too big and way to powerful to allow anything to happen to hinder their future sales of product. Not only that; just think of the spin-off industries that depend on the $ that fishermen/women spend. Seems like all these people want is for the fishermen to be aware/sympathetic of their issue. You also might want to look at Japan, they did ban all non-biodegradable soft plastics back in 2000 or so. Their reason was related to the shear amount of soft plastics lying on the lake bottoms and affecting the natural seepage of water from lakes. That would literally take a bunch of baits, although the concern was there and they did what they had to. Sensitive times we live in. Delw Posted April 28, 2009 Report Share Posted April 28, 2009 Thats the typical mind set of "Gay Bass" fishermen ( we call them gay bass here in az). These numbnuts and people like them will use any excuess to help there cause and blame it on this or that. Bass fishermen do the same thing look at guys fishing in the west coast for bass and heavens forbid they keep one. Ive seen trout and bass and pretty much every fish crap out hooks worms even a dropshot weight still attached to the hook. some make it some don't too bad so sad. if you look at the picture its just a dumb fish it ate something way to big bass do the same thing all the time, maybe we should ban crappie and bluegill from our lakes as I have seen many fish floating on the top with a 1-2lb crappie in its throat. I have seen the people you speak of here in Utah Delw. The kind that will get so up set they throw there pole and kick there fishing box across the boat. I hate stupid people! diemai Posted April 29, 2009 Report Share Posted April 29, 2009 (edited) We have some alien crabs over here in Germany , also northern Europe , that have been brought here from Asia by accident in the ballast tanks of ships about 100 years ago . They have become a pest to fishermen , since they eat up any bait minnows or other baits , before fish can find them , also eating trapped fish caught in the nets of commercial fishermen . But they also do eat plastic lures snagged into the rock embankments of the "Elbe" river(and others , off course) , one can find these lures at low tide , as they become visible . But if they are there for two tidal periods or more , only a "carrot"-like chunk of plastic is left sticking onto the leadhead ! Tubeman Posted April 29, 2009 Report Share Posted April 29, 2009 After talking to a few of the industry reps from Pure Fishing (Gulp) and Rapala (Trigger X) at the spring fishing shows I found NONE of them knew how long it would take for their baits to bio-degrade in water. It's all marketing that gets people to believe a white lie...yes its probably more bio degradeable than plastisol, but how much better is it for the environment. These products are so new, not even the manufactuers know the long term effects on the environment. They have more landfill waste in that bag than a Happy Meal! Bottom line is, we are not trying to hurt anything. I try not to worry about it!
