finlander
How did that dye arrive from Noel? What would you suggest to keep the colors in after I have mixed them up? I want to find containers before they arrive.

finlander
I have alot of choices of what I could use to put these mixes in. How 'air tight' do they have to be? so they won't dry out? I have to try something tomorrow to dye the paint with, Noel told me. If it works I'll let ya'll know! finlander
He told me what the dyes are and where to get them. Now I am wondering what the clear 'paint' is and if I can get it locally too. Mind you, I haven't procured any dyes yet. When I do, I will mix them with his paint, try them on a plastic lure, and let you know the results. Noel said if no one will sell me the dyes then I can still buy from him, at about $7.50 for an ounce. I'll let you know...
finlander
OK I finally got caught up on honey-do's and mixed up my dyes, paint from Noel and some MEK. I didn't mix it up thoroughly butt well enough to apply to a plastic tail. Where it wasn't laid on too thick it dried quick and will not rub off!! Actually seemed to absorb into the plastic tail. Anybody care to guess where you all can get it locally???
redg8r
are you tormenting us? or you just like to see us in anticipation? did you find a source? was it for the dye only, or the base also? be nice & do tell
finlander
I was actually going to tell you personally Jerry but couldn't comes up with your email... I was trying to see if anyone cared to make a guess what 'it' is and where it could be found, the 'dyes' I mean. I don't have a clue what this 'base' is. Didn't smell half as bad as Noel made it out to be. He told me what the dyes were. That man can talk boy. Half an hour both times. Maybe cause I am a Michigander and he used to be, was the reason he fessed up. I didn't even ask. He asked me, if I wanted to know what the stuff was, so I said sure. then he told me....He said if I couldn't get anyone to sell it to me, even in small amounts, to contact him where it would cost $7.50 for an ounce or so. Come on, I want to see some attempts here. Anyone know what the 'base' is???
redg8r
Well..... My guess on the dyes, is that its the some form of the "paste dye" thats used in manufactured soft plastics. the MF & Lurecraft varieties are the same paste in a supension of some sort (this is my opinion only) as for the base, the smell of it is very similar to typical PVC glue, but pvc glue isnt comparable for the application, so I'm dumbfounded there also. By the way, I warned you he was a talker Hes a good fella, I should drive up & visit him sometime.
finlander
Ok here goes...the industry will hunt me down and you never will hear from this Finn again. The dyes I bought at the local hardware store for a buck a dollop are.............i fergit sumetimez....ok the head is clear again...must be those fumes....dyes that are dropped into those gallon containers to make up the colors your wife wants for a 'robin's egg blue.' They are very concentrated and will stain your skin/clothes and will probably never come out. (I am listening for the sirens of approaching authorities.....silence...so far) I bought only 3 colors, the primaries. I may go back to get others. A thought on the base; ever see that clear stuff that separates from paint after it has sat for a while, the stuff that is always on top when you open the can.........I wonder.... Can I turn in my 'tokens' for that free gift now..before they carry me away
finlander
OK, guess nobody is interested in this...its old news...guess I'll erase my answer....gosh....Jerry...how do do I erase my last post????
redg8r
OK, guess nobody is interested in this...its old news...guess I'll erase my answer....gosh....Jerry...how do do I erase my last post???? Slow down now....... I had trouble readin between the lines tryin to figure out what you posted. Are you sayin its pigment colors for mixing into household paint from the hardware store?? Do you have a brand name or type of packaging or any kinda name?? What did the hardware assistant call it? was it available for retail, or did you have to armwrestle an employee for it Thanks for the legwork on this, lemme know & i'll test it out, have you tried it yet? the clear base still eludes me........ finlander
Yes, the 'dyes' that the hardware man drips into the paint base to make up a particular color, is what i am talking about. I bought the 3 primaries and mixed up with 1 part Noel's secret formula and 2 parts MEK. I then dabbed some on a plastic tail I poured last fall and let dry. It has stayed on the plastic and won't come off. Almost looks like it melded with it. It is not laying on top of the surface of my plastic tail. It melded down into it. Can't wait til my plastic arrives from Del this week. About the 'base' stuff. As I said before, the clear stuff in a long standing gallon of paint, that is on top of the paint. Do you think that is close to what Noel sent us??
redg8r
Dont think so...... Sure the separation is the base, with the pigment settled in the bottom, but that happens with most suspensions. the base is full of some strong solvent, similar to PVC Glue, I'm not a chemist, but it has to be close. its none of the typical solvents we work with like thinner, acetone, MEK, etc. The base is also syrupy like corn syrup, so thiers likely a polymer in it too. Ive contacted every connection I know to renew the hunt, I'm awaiting replies. wish me luck.
finlander
Who wants to pay for a test to be done on the stuff? A chemical breakdown to determine what it is? I'm off tomorrow, maybe I'll call Noel for a long chat........ I did not have to argue too much to get the small amounts of dye. I wanted to try a larger store but it seemed better to start with a business small enough so I could talk to the owner about the small amounts I needed. Just what part of the Everglades is you at anyways?
