Choosing the Correct Respirator

Recommended Posts

I think it's about time I start wearing a respirator. I been doing some searching both here and online and I'm leaning towards one of these two. I do want to make sure I'm using the right filters as well. .

The first respirator pictured is the 3M 7500 (built for comfort and cool exhaling) series and the second one is the 3M 5000 series.

The filter I believe to be the correct one is the 3M 5P71 P95 Respirator Filter

Thanks in advance for your input.

Richard

I use a motorised fan venting full face mask. Not sure how good it would be for spraying, but for wood it is perfect. It keeps my face cool and dry in the tropical climate. With the half face mask, I was gurgling in a pool of sweat after 15 minutes.

The cable and battery pack can be minor inconvenience, but a small price to pay for comfort. Also, I get to wear my regular spectacles.

Are you saying that with the half mask I wouldn't be able to wear my glasses? It wouldn't do me much good to be able to breathe but not see.

What Dave is showing is for dust and would not handle the fumes we make. I don't have a pick of mine but it's a 3M and fits snugly over your face so that no fumes get to you. They can be exspensive but what price do you put on your eyes and face?

As far as a 1/2 mask and glasses goes, you are right Richard that your glasses will steam up very quickly.

The way I see it; you can go with a full face mask or get contacts and a 1/2 mask, lol.

Thanks. Then a 1/2 mask would be useless to me. Do you have a model number? Thanks for the info

Richard,

I own a safety supply business, and this is the first question I'm qualified to answer!!

Just a quick background on respirators, n95 or n100 is the % of particulants the filter stops. n95 stops 95% of the particulants, n100 stops 100%. OV is short for organic vapors. Usually a fliter is rated for one or the other, or both particulants and organic vapors. Also, the face masks have a size to them, and to get a perfect fit, you need to be "fit tested". Any occupional medical facility should be able to do this for you for a fee, but they may only test for one brand, such as 3M or North, ect., and all brands fit just a little different. Word of caution: "I gotta big head, so I need large" is not always correct, the "size" figures in the contour of the face as fare as the best fit.

When you go to get fit tested, if you ask them (or anyone who supplies them) what you need, it gets tough, because the manufactor will want to know all kinds of details like how many microns, or other units of lawyer terms per square inch is in the atmosphere, ect...

You're smart to use a respirator, much cheeper in the long run!! :yay:
