Lew's Speed Spool problem

When I have loan this reel to someone who gets a backlash, (I haven't had one) the loose line sometimes goes between the spool and the frame on the right side. I have 10 lb. mono on it now. I tried spacing the spool farther to the right as it seemed a little to the left but that didn't help. Maybe this is an unrepairable problem with the tolerence between the edge of the spool and the frame. Man, this is a cool reel otherwise and I hate to have to park it. I have had it for probably close to 30 years and it has pretty much always done this. Any ideas besides using 30 lb Trilene XT? Thanks; this is a great forum!

Sounds like you may need to add a shim on the left side. Most probably any copper shim from any manufacturer will work if it fits on the left side.

Here is a link to Lews schematics. If you are comfortable taking the reel apart, you can likely determine what part is missing or worn in the spool control system. It may be one or both friction washers depending on your reel model. The spool should center up in the frame when all is correct and the spool tension is adjusted proprely.

I bought one of those in the late 70's and it was my first bait caster that wasn't an Ambassedeur . It was a pretty good caster but did have a problem with lighter lines getting between wrapped between the spool and frame just like you describe . I don't think there is much that can be done to correct this as it was due to the gap (tolerance) between the spool lip and reel frame . Another annoying qwirk with that reel was an Anti-reverse button that sat on top of the reel . Many times when setting the hook with a worm or jig I'd hit the button and the handle would start spinning backwards releasing line . I finally got tired of fighting that reel and sold it to someone who loved those reels .
