currituckbasser
I have a couple of casting rods that I want to split the grips but I don't need to do anything w/ the guides. Is it possible to stretch a winding check over the guides? Is there any check that is more flexible than others? What material is suggested? Thanks
Mattman
You can wrap thread for a winding check. http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t288/Otterods/Spinning/PICT0175.jpg http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t288/Otterods/Spinning/PICT0002PSB704.jpg You can also cut the rubber checks and open them up to slip around the blank. I personally don't use them so I don't know if they'd stretch enough to get over guides or a grip...but I doubt it.
currituckbasser
Matt, that sounds like a good idea although I don't know how to pull it off. I'm not an expert @ rod building but I'm sure that I could do it w/ few tips from you or someone on this board. Thanks.
MTfishingrods
I have some laying around. I just tried to stretch one. The answer is no. The correct size one will not stretch over the guides and come back to shape. Like Matt said though I rarely use them. You can get you epoxxy to run right up on the cork to make a clean sloping transition. then do a wrap over it. Or if your cork is quality cork you can just run your thread wrap up to it and then epoxy over it and make the bevel. Its really pretty easy. mark poulson
Could you form one from Bondo, paint it, and then epoxy it?
Mattman
Could you form one from Bondo, paint it, and then epoxy it? Yes I know a number of guys that make ramps from paste epoxy. Then the run their wrapping thread right up and over the ramp.
