I hate nipples

Recommended Posts

On my jig heads that is.. :D

Have any of you figured out a way to fix the heads that have nipples?

Out of the 50 football heads that I powder coated Saturday (Using fluid bed), 12 of them developed nipples in the oven during the cure. Hate to waste them. I cut them off with a pair of snips, but now I have an ugly flat spot.

Any advice appreciated..

First if you cut off the nipple make sure it's smooth and re-bake the head and it will finish curing.

Second - If these are the first you have done you'll end up with them it's just part of the process, it's happened to all of us. The problem is you're gettting too much powder on them when you're dipping them. Either you're not getting them hot enough to dip or you're leaving them in the powder too long.

Gave you both scenario's

Bassgrabber,

Yes you can get rid of them if they aren't excessively large (wrong choice of words). First of all if you baked them, I'm going to say that it will be tougher to do. If you have not baked them, then you can take a pair of forceps, and grab the hook shank. Now hold the jig with the head up. Now you will take a heat gun, and slowly heat up the jig, so the paint evens out. You will see when this happens. Do not burn the paint, otherwise it will be junk. Naturally this is a last resort to a problem that :censored: happens. I would not do this to a hundred jigs. BTW what Fatman said is correct. Way too much paint on the jig, that's why you have drip marks. Good luck remember less paint is better. You can alays add more

I agree with the guys who have responded so far- too much paint on the jighead.

I had the same problem when I started and even now, using a fluid bed, it has happened from time to time, so I built a little clamp out of angles and small C-clamps that hold the jigheads upright when in the oven. This way, any XS runs down to the shank where it can either be cut off or left on, since you won't see it. when the skirt is on. Hope this helps, Dave
