blimpy
A couple questions that I couldn't find an answer to on a search: 1) can you make a hoodfan set up effective enough so you don't need to wear a resporator mask while pouring? and; 2) can the hood fan exhaust be filtered in someway so that I don't totally smoke out my neighbors? Thoughts and expeiences would be appreciated, thanks. B
nova
1/ You still have to lean over the pot when you pour; so you are still breathing in the fumes. Always wear the respirator. There are no shortcuts here. 2/ You will not "smoke" out your neighbours if you are heating the plastic at the right temp. There is just not that much smoke. Although they may complain about the smell of the scent if you use it in your plastic. lol. www.novalures.com
eugene
You may be able to use a DOWN-DRAFT table like the wood workers use for sanding.
Green_Fingers
I work alot with extractors and ventilators for another hobby of mine, I think you probably could build a ventelation hood with a powerfull enough extractor so that you would not need to wear a mask, however, the draft created by this would probably be so great, that your plastic would cool too fast to pour properly, so I think wearing a mask is a must no matter what! As for the smoke and even the smell of the plastic you can fit an active carbon filter (the kind sold in "specialist" hydroponic gardening stores!) to the extractor, these kill all odours very effectively, but need changing every year or so. Hope this helps, Simon
blimpy
Thanks for your thoughts. Yes, I wondered about the situation of creating such an airflow that it would cause cooling issues with the plastic. And by 'smoke out' I meant the smell, not actual smoke:eek:. I don't imagine the neighbors in my new neighborhood would appreciate the smell of molten plastisol as they try to enjoy dinner on their patio. It is funny though, my wife says I smell like the dolly she had as a little girl when I am done pouring . B
Richard Prager
It is funny though, my wife says I smell like the dolly she had as a little girl when I am done pouring . Watch out she doesn't want to brush your hair and dress you up!
Green_Fingers
Blimpy, In that case an active carbon filter, like this: Charcoal Carbon Filters, would do the trick, kills 100% of the smell if it is fitted to your extractor unit properly.
