OK, first pours. What went wrong? Suggestions needed

Recommended Posts

Obviously something went very wrong.:?

I'm pouring large saltwater "sluggo-type' baits. Molds look great. New pyrex measuring cups. I'm using the saltwater plastic formula, black dye. Real basic stuff.

I pour 8oz of plastic in the pyrex cup, 10 drops of black dye, heat in microwave for 2 minutes, and carefully pour.

My molds were not perfectly level, so the liquid ran a bit, but I could deal with that. However, the stuff will not set up? It's been a half hour, and it's still very tacky, and sticks to the touch.

I thought this stuff set up in a few minutes? Did I overheat it?

I wasn't expecting this.

you did not heat it enough. should take 3min for 8oz maybe 4min.

do the 2min then stir then do it for another min. stir should be better.

i have a video on here you might want to watch.

Did you shake/mix the plastic enough? sometimes the hardener will settle to the bottom and the softener will rise to the top. I there is too much softener and not enough hardener sometimes it will not set up. just a thought. Depending on the plastic you REALLY need to mix well.

I'm using a pre-mix saltwater formula, so there's nothing to add. However, I did shake the bottle vigorously for several minutes, and I'm pretty sure I mixed everything thoroughly.

It's been almost 1.5 hours, and it still has not set up?

It more than likely won't ever set up.

I don't believe it was ready to pour.

Try this:

Use a smaller amount of plastic say 4oz

Nuke on high for 1:15 seconds

Take it out and look at it and stir

The plastic has to go from the thin liquid state and thicken up to a gel (which I believe you never reached that state)

Nuke for another 30 seconds look at it and stir.

It will go from what you started with to a clear gel state and then to a thin pouring state. If it hasn't done that yet, nuke for another 30 seconds look at it and stir. If you watch it actually change states you will get a better idea. Let us know your results.

OK, then another question.

Can you overheat this stuff, so that the chemical properties no longer work, and it won't harden?

I had 4oz in a pyrex beaker, and did 2 minutes in the microwave on high. It definately changed not only color, but viscosity, and the beaker was hot to the touch.

But I will say, the stuff was pouring like water? I didn't expect that.

So, if it doesn't set up, should I just scrape my molds down, and remelt the stuff?

thanks all.:yay:

Hey Bob I did the same thing when I started pouring B), you need to go 3 to 4 mins in the micro then stir it should be thick almost like caulk by then and then go in 30 sec increments until it has the consistency of syrup you will have an open time of around 1 min. Good luck, have fun and let us know how you make out.

I think every one agrees according to their past experance and .. I 2nd it.

It has to go from liquid to a thick jelly to thin and ready to pour.

You can overheat but will mostly only be off color ... unless you over heat and catch it on fire ... Don't breathe the fumes from Plastisol that is burning or has burnt ...

The plastisol you have in the mold ... pour it back into the pyrex and start over.

WIPE THE MOLD OUT GOOD AND DRY.

Have Fun and let us know how it turns out.

Guys, all is well!:yay:

I just wasn't heating the plastic enough. So, after I spent the afternoon, wiping out, and cleaning my molds, I gave it another shot. This time, I heated plastic up 'without' color first. Just right out of the bottle, to see the transition it makes from milky to clear. I did 3 minutes for 8 ounces on high.

Then I added my color (black in this case), have it another minute in the m-wave, stirred a lot, and poued. My baits turned out perfect.

I just poured some 2 tone baits. 9" sluggos with pearl oon the bottom and black on top, and they look fine.

Thanks for your help guys. You saved the day.
