Cool topwater video from Japan

Recommended Posts

Found a cool video of a really interesting topwater lure that has a little built in motor in it that makes the tail vibrate in the water.

Obviously would be difficult for a home tinkerer to mess with, but I love seeing cool little ideas like this. Now I just need to wait for KC Dano to come and post a 40 year old lure that does the same thing.

One thing I found interesting when looking into the company that made the video is that apparently there is a whole little segment of Japanese fishing that focuses on traditional topwater lures (with new twists, obviously). Its been really interesting to look into, although there is very little information in English about it. 5'6" fiberglass poles, pistol grip rods, old abu round reels; it looks like a lot of fun for a topwater junkie like myself.

SmokeyJ,

Actually, there was a lure made many years ago that worked the same as the one in the video. It had a string that was pulled out when it was casted or you could just give the rod a quick jerk and the cord would pull out and wind up the "motor" inside.

Lincoya,

I figured it had been done before; there just isn't much new it seems when it comes to lurebuilding.

LP,

I was kind of thinking the same thing. I was getting ready to raid my daughters old baby toys to find a donor but we have another baby on the way and my wife would throw a conniption fit if I started butchering the baby toys for lure parts. :D

There were several lures manufactured in recent time that employed cell phone motors with an offset weight to vibrate the lure. Now I am sure if some one was to determine the frequency of a distressed baitfish and tune the motor to that frequency it could be a decent plug. Rebel back in the 60's studied many of the all time fish catching lures made throughout the years. Discovering for the most part all the great fish catching lures had a narrow frequency range of oscillation.. However, they may have overlooked the fact, as recent studies have indicated some fish are just dumb.
