Pouring Laminates

Recommended Posts

I have been pouring soft plastics since 1997. I have learned quite a bit and I know that I will continue to learn in the future. One thing that I have not learned because I have been putting it off is POURING LAMINATES. Is there a tutorial or anything in writing that can help to acomplish this feat? Thanks to all.

In an open mold you pour the first color; let it set for a few seconds and then pour the second color on top.

Some guys allow the first layer to cool quite a bit; but I don't.(personal preferance). I even like to pour the second layer as soon as I can. This will give you a blended look to the lamination which to me is more natural than a fine line connection of the two colors.

Try to master laminations in open molds before you move on to 2 piece molds. (this can be tricky).

Show us some pics when you get going.

B&D It wouldn't really work on a production basis, but another option for laminates if you have aluminum molds is to simply pour cold plastic and bake 'em...

OK... Since everyone else is wondering... I'll ask.. How can you pour cold plastic into a 2 piece mold and bake it to result in a laminate color?

I am curious on the process with a 2 piece mold as I can't figure it out in my head...

Lol...Well I meant in a one piece mold...

But if pressed..I guess I'd bake em open faced..and put the halves together as they cool...

Or

Pour hot plastic (perhaps with a touch more heat stab.) in to the two piece mold halves..let cool enough toset, then put together...put in preheated toaster oven for about 5-10 minutes..and..viola!

Or

As above but hit it with a heat gun for a bit...
