Painting Tungsten Weights

Recommended Posts

Has anyone tried painting Tungsten weights? I looked at some of the previous threads and couldn't get any great information. I can get them cheaper in bulk unpainted, but like to have the painted weights for my baits. It would be great to be able to powder paint and such but does it work?

Do you need to heat longer? Does the insert get damaged?

I was thinking of testing it out, but if someone can help before I start that would be great.

Thanks

I think the insert would get damaged from the heat, but there are lots of alternatives, a sharpie isn't a good idea since it will come off in a very short amount of time because it's ink, on the other hand there is a product called quick coat lure markers, these are basically a maker that uses actual paint and are quite easy to use. The markers come with a few interchangable tip and all you have to do is shake the marker like you would a paint can, then press the marker down so that most of the tip is inside the marker body, this is the valve and after a few seconds the paint will begin to flow into the tip and you are ready to paint. You can go an extra step and use clear nail polish or epoxy to coat the painted weight afterwards to give you a more durable finish.

Would powder paint work for weights with no insert?

As for painting them with spray paint, one of the things I really like about tungsten is how hard it is, and how I can feel the bottom with it better than lead. Wouldn't a spary paint damp down that hardness?

And I've used sharpies. It does wear off, but so does the paint on Tru Tungstens factory painted weights.

Since it's a fast drying ink, I just touch them up on the water, like I do with lead head jigs whose paint chips.

I heard spray paint works great and it is cheap I am trying it on lead weights tonight I just got the first coat of paint on and I am going to use epoxy with glitter in it after the second coat of paint drys. I thought I would try it on the lead weights first as they are less money.
