Lock 45
I plan on making some BIG Musky safety pin style spinner baits, not inline. While I do have some 1/16" stainless tig rod, I thought that stainless bicycle spokes could be used. These come in larger diameters than 1/16", such as 13ga., and 12ga. Has anyone used stainless bicycle spokes with success? Any tips on bending this thick material? I would prefer to create a closed eye instead of an open " R " style of wire frame. Big Splash
I dont use wire that heavy, but when making large spinnerbaits, I use a double wrap to make the line tie. It looks just like the twist on a real saftey pin. You can see them on my web site, or in the gallery here.
Glaucus
I've never used spokes, but for my 12oz spinnerbaits I use 3/32" (0.094") music wire. http://www.ksmetals.com/ is the brand I use, hobby shops carry it, K&S also make a wire bender. http://home.earthlink.net/~bazillion/springs.html is full of info about wire work, including drawings of simple wire bending jigs. luremaking.com sells .062" SS wire, both straight & ready formed for spinnerbaits. Lock 45
Hey Glaucus, Did you know about the lure building get together held last weekend? It was at Bayview and Hwy. # 7. Go to the Muskystriker sight and read about it in the forum there. We had a super time exchanging ideas about homemade lures. There was both wooden lure making and bucktail tying. We had maybe 20 in attendance. Check out the photos.
Reelcharacter
Glaucus, Just signed up and had to thank you for the wire spring "how to" site. Would like to try making some wire spinner baits and have been looking for info on how to get started without having to buy a bunch of equipment. Anyone have a good how to link specifically for making wire fishing lures? Thanks in advance, -Reelcharacter
Party Crasher
Big Splash is right on. Use a double-wrap instead of a twisted-wire loop for wire this thick. The problem with wire this thick is getting a clevis or beads over it if you want to make a tandem bladed model. You may have to use a #8 clevis and 5/16th beads as spacers which begins to effect the blade rotation.
