maltrout
I am looking for a good recipe to imitate a smelt. Will be making various drop shot baits to fish in places where smelt are the primary forage fish. I have messed around with some whites and silver fleck but havent come up with anything I really like yet. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated Thanks Matt

maltrout
Here are a couple pictures of smelt that came from smallmouth spitting them up.
nova
I'll give you the belly color but I can't give the back color. 4 oz. plastic; 1/16 tsp white pearl; 1/8 tsp small silver holi. www.novalures.com Edited September 15, 2009 by nova
stratmanv
Nova is right on! The only other thing I can see to add, maybe a small amount of violet highlite powder for that iridescent look.
GB GONE
I would use what Nil stated as the belley and play with colors for the back... I like the Earthworm color in mine if the smelt have any pink color to them... Try blue pearl powder, green pearl powder or purple as mentioned to get some nice others.. You can use the belly color as a base and SPARINGLY add pearl... BTW the smoke pearl colors that M-F makes allows you to add the pearlescent colors way easier than the powders. It does not firm up the bait bad easier.... Jim
Flecksbaits
The back in the first pic looks like you could go with maybe a green pumpkin with a drop or two of white in it to opaque it a bit more and a bit of violet powder.
