rlcam
Don't know if I have told this story but if I have here it is again. This summer me and a friend were fishing below Wilson Dam on Pickwick Lake.We were throwing top water for schooling strippers and bass.We were by a wing wall and I was using my favorite topwater bait,a Splash-It.I cast parallel to the wing wall and notice a Heron standing there and he flinched when it landed.I saw him and said oh no big boy and reeled in as fast as I could. On the second cast,it landed and I looked down at my reel for something and when I looked up he was landing on it:eek:.I jerked the bait and it hung in his wing and he flew off with it (like I had a kite).I pulled him back down to the boat, and tried to get him within reaching distance.I was sure he was going to go ape **it when I grabbed him and peck my eyes out .I hear my buddy laughing and I ask for assistance and he grabs his phone to take a picture:pissed:.Well I get the bird up and begin to try and get my bait back,he jumps in the boat and on one of my buddies rods and gets a hook in his foot.He jumps out of the boat with my buddies rod,now it's not so funny to him:p and I get some help.Well I finally get the bait back along with half his wing feathers and let him go.During all this I hear laughter and look up and about six guys working on the dam were just hee haawing.I asked them whats so funny haven't you ever seen anyone catch a bird before? One guy said he thought that bird was going to kick my tail. That bait is still the best $14.00 I ever spent even if it does catch a Heron every now and then.I am probably on You Tube somewhere .Its funnier now than then...Rob
Vodkaman
Funny story, you'll have to post the pics. It sounds careless to catch a bird, but they are crafty creatures. I have caught two birds to date, a little grebe and a Canada goose, niether was a pleasant experience, both survived. Dave
hazmail
Great story Rob, I can nearly picture this and you will get laughs from this story for years. I had a Sea Eagle all but pick up one of my Mullet lures a couple of days back while fishing a coastal lake. I could see him eyeing it off and diving, but could not do anything but crank as fast as I could, the lure was a floater ! ! - the eagle broke off about 2' off the water and 10' from the boat, I thought we were going to cop 8' of eagle wings and talons in the face. Herons/ Eagles, whatever, they have amazing eyesight, this bird, it's partner and offspring had been working that part of hte lake from about 150' all morning, caught more fish then we did, amazing to watch (from a distance) - Pete

GB GONE
Had a friend throwing a topwater frog at dusk last week... Just at night fall, something swopes down and grabs his frog as it is gurgeling across the pond.. OWL on!!!!!!!! That was a fight right there!!! hook finally pulled out but owls are serious fighters! Would not have wanted that bad boy close!!! Bird flew off fine and we laughed a good while!!! Jim

rlcam
Braided Line,I also have had some gators hit a Gambler Flapping Shad at Okeechobee a few years back. One was about five foot long,he bit the super line hook in two. After he gets loose my buddy (same guy in previous story) catches him.I tell him to bring him around to me and he brings the head to me:oooh:.After I get him to turn him around I try to grab his tail (like an idiot),and almost get my brains slapped out by the tail..There seems to be a trend with my fishing partner, maybe we could write a book on what not to hook when fishing:lol:....Rob
