wildtail97
Has anyone ever built a lure testing tank? Just thought I would ask the experts before I jumped into the internet sea. I want something that has walls I can video tape through. I most likely will not be putting bass in it. But you never know! Thanks guys! Richard Prager
You can use a fish tank. They run about $1 per gallon new and come in all shapes and sizes.
Vodkaman
Because I live in rented accomodation, I could not build anything permanent. Mine is built of plywood panels, dry screwed together, for easy disassembly. 8' x 3' x 1.5', holds 5,500 gals. It was full of water for about three months continuous, so the design works. I guess a glass window could be incorporated, but the tank is designed to be lined with polythene sheet. Note, if the tank is kept outdoors, some kind of filtration will be required, or the water turns yellow very quickly. Dave

Artificial All The Way
I use my pool with filter on and off to check in current. Clear enough to film if you want. Getting an under water cam for this soon. In the winter I use my boat and or a dock in the river. I'll hang several test lures off the dock or where ever at the same time to see best actions. i've had fish come up and hit my lures while testing. Thats proff positive the fish want them. My buddy has a tank. Can;t leave water in it or it stinks and turns green. PIA to store. Most times it's under 400 things in his garage. Last 2 times he tested was in my pool. Might be because my beer fridge is always full though.
Vodkaman
Another thing to consider and be aware of, is the length of line in front of the lure is important. I have lures that swim well in a large swimming pool, but proved to be disappointing in the test tank. Keep the tow line as long as possible for a more realistic representation. wildtail97
THanks for all the info guys. I have a pool to use but really wanted to have something that I can use my HD camera to shoot the lures action from the side. Has anyone shot video through a window? I think it would work if the lighting is correct.
mikefishnfl
It will work, but you need very good overhead lighting. A basic light fixture for aquarium use will do this. Do not use your flash.
BBK
You can use a fish tank. They run about $1 per gallon new and come in all shapes and sizes. Mind finding me a 75 gal tank for 75 bucks?
Richard Prager
Mind finding me a 75 gal tank for 75 bucks? He was asking about a tank for soft plastics to shoot videos. I was ASSuming (bad habit of mine) it was to show the action using a stand up or drop shot rig, etc. If that is/was the case a 30 gallon tall type tank should work. I've seen some nice demos on You Tube using small tanks with the company logo/website on the glass. I've been wanting to to that (and many other things) for a while. Those sizes can be obtained for the price I mentioned. As the tanks get any larger than that, the price will go up because of the thickness of the glass needed. However, if you will settle for a used tank you can get larger ones cheap. Just look in the paper. People get tired of taking care of their fish tanks and dump them cheap. Pitbull Baits
their is a place called glass cages .com or something like that. They had a 75 tall. They will also build you custom tanks. I don't think they have bad prices either.
