jeffcpr
A customer has brough me all parts need for two surf rods. I am having trouble sliding the EVA on to the butt section. In years past I was taught to spray WD-40 to help it slid on but I can not get it to slid all the way down now. I am wondering if there is a different way like maybe soaking the EVA in hot water to get it to stretch more. Any more advice would be helpfull thanks. MTfishingrods
Never have used wd40 myself. I use U-40 Rod Bond. The epoxy acts as a lubricant when sliding them into place. Not sure how much further you need to go. You could always boil the grips and then slide them on if needed. But shouldnt be needed. Actually after thinking about this a bit more those grips are now contaminated with the WD40 and the rod Bond will likely not adhere to them. You may be stuck scrapping them and starting over. Honestly they should not even need to be boiled. With Rod Bond it is amazing how far you can make that stuff slide. MTfishingrods
At least this is a easy cheap mistake. We all make em no matter how many rods we build. It just seems the more rods you build the more costly the mistakes become.
jeffcpr
Thanks again for your help, I will be back with more question as I plan on doing more work and I am sure there will be more learning involved.
Mattman
I too use Rod Bond. You can also heat your foam in the microwave. Watch it closely, you can take it too far and distort it. But getting it nice and warm makes a big difference in its stretchability. Hot water will work too. I've put the grip in a gallon ziplock to keep it dry. Also, I don't typically like to stretch foam more than twice its ID. I typically buy my foam with ID's fairly close to the blanks OD.
