edw
I am new to this site so if my question has been covered before, I'm sorry. I want to make a mold to make 12 inch slugo type plastic lures. I have the mold making method down pat but I can't come up with a good way to make a mold that would include a 7/0 treble. If anyone has any ideas I would be gratefull.
Vodkaman
'Artificial All The Way' brought this question up, last April. Here is a link: http://www.tackleunderground.com/forum/soft-plastics/16700-making-pre-rigged-lures.html Good time for an update, to see if any progress was made. Vodkaman
Sorry, I have not come up with anything yet. Still trying, I don't like losing a battle of ideas. Dave
edw
I have been giving this a lot of thought lately. I think I will use a dowel to carve my mold shape out of. then cut the dowel for the hook end, drill a hole in that piece and then hand carve slots for the hook. Then I will glue the two pieces back together. When I put all of that in the mold box I will position two points of the hook down and add the mold material. The hook points will get stuck in the mold material and I will have to burr them out but really all I need is the slots near the mold cavity to hold the hook in place. Sound like it might work? mainbutter
just checking, but does this topic include things like internal wire harnesses(which include hook hangers), like we see with big musky soft plastics like bulldawgs? I'd love to see how to make soft plastics that have internal wire harnesses/weights
Delw
EDW it would realll help alot if you could post a picture, of the mold you want to use and how you want the hooks rigged up, as it can be interpeted in many ways. Mainbutter: thats easy stuff to to do. the bull dawgs that you are talkign about is very easy as the bait is poured from the bottom(which would be the top of the bait) the harness can be rigged up so that you would use paper clips. generally the mold is 2 halfs and the hook eye is in the nose and the other hook is in the back fin ( these are cut into the mold). again there are many ways to do this and every mold and bait can be different. even the same bait in a differenty type of mold. edw
What I want to do is simple ----I want one big 7/0 trebble in the middle [speaking diameter now] in a 12 inch worm profile bait to be used as a component in a bigger lure. The hook eye will protrude barely from the front of the worm. Nothing fancy and no wires....just a hook.
Vodkaman
This may or not work. If I were going to try this, I would make an RTV mold, probably using the acetic acid curing RTV, as described by Husky. Have the nose of the worm close to the edge of the mold. Once cured, make three cuts for the treble, so that it can be pushed in from the nose. The RTV should be soft enough to close around the wire. Extra RTV could be added to reinforce, after the cuts are made. Then their is the problem of the sprue funnel. Maybe a separate insert or something. This is an idea that could be developed and refined further. If there is a solition, the members here will help you find it. Good luck and keep us informed. edw
It has took me a long time and several molds before I finally came up with a way to mold a large trebble in a 12" lure. I first carved my lure shape out of a wood dowel. I then cut the dowel the length of the trebble I wanted to use. Then I drilled a hole down the center of the short cut off piece big enough to push the eye of the trebble in. On the other end of this short piece of dowel I marked the three places where the hook rides. Then I removed the hook and cut slots in the dowel so the hook would be flush. After installing the hook I filled the hole in the dowel with wood putty and sanded flat. Then I glued the dowel back together. To make the mold I Made a box out of wood [ 1/4" hard wood]. Then I cut a slot in the bottom of the box for one point of the hook. I also made a slot in the front of the box for the hook eye. I pushed the form in the box so the front of the lure was flush to the front of the box with the hook eye in the front slot and the hook point sticking out the bottom and the dowel resting on the box. Before I pored rtv I covered the two slots with silver tape. Making the actual lure is as easy as installing the trebble and closing the slots with silver tape each pour. The lure comes out of the mold easy with a trebble dead center in the center of the lure.
