brendandrage
Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is any advantages or disadvantages other than convenience of the tow point between the 2 options for spinner bait wires? cadman
Brendan, I personally like the twisted eye myself. I hate the line sliding up into the "R" bend. I know you can put collars over the "R" bend but to me it's just more stuff to fool around with. I have also heard that it is easier to tune the "R" bend wire than the twisted loop. I have had no problems with the twisted loop.
Jig Man
I have both and use both. The draw back for me on the twisted is line wrapping around the wire. The draw backs for me on the R bend is line sliding up the wire and the wire bending out when I am using braid and get hung in some brush. That said I like the twisted best. smalljaw
I'm just the opposite, I would rather the "r" bend over a closed loop any day, I used to fish a closed loop but I like to use mono for spinnerbaits and I've lost too many fish and spinnerbaits because of the line wrapping around the closed loop. As far as the line sliding on the "r" bend, I don't have a problem with it, I use a palomar knot and it stays in place but I have had major sliding problems while using braid. The main problem I have found with the closed eye wire frames is they get out of tune very easily. I think this is because the legs of the wire leaving the eye are not on the same plane as they are with the 'R' bend type frames. Just about all the closed eye spinnerbaits will have a tendency to roll very easily because of this. As for the line sliding up the wire frame, the only time I have found that to be a problem was when fighting a large fish. Somehow a lot of things become distorted on a spinnerbait in that circumstance.
JSC
Just 2 cents worth .. I like the twisted eye for the really tough conditions with hevier wire ... I like the R bend for a little lighter wire and conditions not so tough ... I use an even lighter wire with a coil or safety pin bend for the more open water conditions. I think they all have there good and bad points. JSC
KandyBass
I like the "R" bend. Just too many bad experiences with the twisted wire. Line getting caught and eventually breaking is the main one. I also had trouble tuning them.
MEckl8321
This isn't a perfect solution to line wrapping on a twisted frame, but it worked for me; Coat the twist with a little bit of rod cement or even Sally Hansen Hard as Nails(snitched from the wife's makeup drawer). Once it dried, the twists in the wire were almost smooth and the line didn't have anything to snag on.
Tony Maxwell
I use nothing but R bend. Have not had problems with knot sliding. I believe that the blade rotation vibration transfers completely thru the bait better. Just my opinion.
