Celticav
What is the differences between IM 6, 7, and 8?
Bushmaster
It's all about strength and sensitivity. I'm not certain what the "I" stands for (probably "intrinsic") but the "M" stands for "Modulus". modulus Mod"u*lus, n.; pl. Moduli. [L., a small measure. See Module, n.] (Math., Mech., & Physics) A quantity or coefficient, or constant, which expresses the measure of some specified force, property, or quality, as of elasticity, strength, efficiency, etc.; a parameter. In graphite fishing rods it is a measure of the strength and sensitivity. Sensitivity is measured by modulus in the industry. The more modulus a rod has, the more sensitive, light, and expensive the rod will be. IM6 graphite has about 35 million modulus, IM7 graphite has about 45 million modulus, while IM8 graphite has about 60 million modulus. Modulus is actually basically the tightness of the weave of the material that makes up the rod. Graphite having 30-60 million modulus is much more sensitive then the average fiberglass rod which has between 6 and 14 modulus. Hope this helps. Fishingrodlady
That is a very accurate answer. The "I" stands for Intermediate rather than Intrinsic. Also keep in mind that the higher modulus blanks are more fragile than the standard or intermediate modulus. It is my opinion that the custom rod builders should be more concerned with the action of their blanks and whether the individual blank fits their particular fishing application than with the modulus. There has been a great deal of hype about modulus in advertising campaigns but the average fisherman cannot feel the difference of an ounce or two in their fishing rods. beentheredonethat
Hello Sharon! I referenced you in a previous post....small world! here's a link to 'just one' discussion on IM6-7-8....I always enjoy these! http://www.rodbuilding.org/read.php?f=2&i=12494&t=12483 I do believe that a rod's action and overall weight is a larger concern than the "im" material. Another possible thing to consider is how much abuse a rod will take before it develops fractures and fails. This is not always the case, but in general the higher the material rating the thinner the walls can be made....achieving a lighter, more sensitive blank. But also creating one that may be more prone to use/abuse and failing. btdt
