Lifting Eyes

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've recently upgraded my process of sticking the eyes down and clear coating with nail varnish much to my wife's pleasure and been trying to use epoxies. I have tried D2T and POR 15 but they both seem to lift the edges of they eyes soon after application. I am using a 5/8 banana head and 9/32 flat adhesive eyes, I know the eyes seem big big left untreated or with nail varnish they work fine. I have heated the head to quite warm before applying the eyes and that seems to work but is very slow.

Anyone got some other suggestions before I waste anymore money??????

Regards

Brendan

Brendan,

The 9/32 flat eyes should work fine on a 5/8 oz banana jig. There is plenty of flat surface for the eyes to stick. You do not need to heat the jig. Stick the eye on the painted surface and apply your D2T. Now if you are trying to roll the flat eye over a sharper edge, the eye will start to delaminate from the painted surface.

Hi Cadman

Here is a pic of where I am trying to put them, They do roll a bit at the top but it is minimal and they stick fine untill I apply the topcoat??

Cadman has again addressed the problem you are having as is evidenced from your pic. The eye is rolling over and edge and it creates a tiny gap and once the uncured epoxy or nail polish hit the adhesive on the back of the eye it's done, it seems that you either have to move the eye a little more toward the bottom or drop the size to 1/4", by doing that the eye will be down all the way around and the top coat will lay on top instead of finding its way underneath.

Brendan,

Here are several things you can do depends on how much time you want to spend.

#1...Smalljaws answer to using a smaller eye diameter or moving it down is the easiest and quickest.

#2...You can take the flat stick on eye with the backing on and take it between yoor thumb and fore finger, and squeeze slowly to deform the eye concave. You will see when your done the eye will be bent a little. Do not smash it with your fingers as you will put a crease in the eye.

#3...You can almost use anything to make eyes if you are going to seal them with D2T. You can use colored elect'l tape for the eye and the pupil, you can also use thin plastic holograph ribbon, which will definitely conform to the eye and then put in a black pupil. On anything that doesn't have a self adhesive back, you can use spray on glue or buy thin double sided tape. You can use anything to make eyes, however all of this is time consuming......BTW nice colored jig is that Copperhead?
