timturr
I need help, I have modified a poison tail jig mold to pour spinnerbaits but I am having a problem with my frames being loose inside the head. I know it is still connected to the hook but the frame still moves a little. I haved fluxed my lead and my molds are hot. I need help nailing down the problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Tim attachment=4329:IMG_1028.JPG

The most common is removing it from the mold cavity too quickly. The lead needs a little time to cool throughout before removing from the mold. Another violation is in 'how' you remove it from the mold. Always lift the part from the mold by the sprue, not the hook or the wireframe. If you powder paint the bait, when curing in an oven seems to reset the hook and wire and become solid once cooled. Hope this cures your problem and good luck. smalljaw
I agree 100% with reeves, let the bait in the mold for 10 or 15 seconds after its been cast, then when you remove it, grab the sprue and work it loose like that, if you are having trouble getting it out like that try smoking the mold with a candle, this will coat the cavity in soot and will make getting the bait out a little easier. timturr
Thanks guys, I am a little too fast at opening the mold though I do always remove with the sprue. I have not noticed after painting and baking if the head tightens up. I am going to do some tonight and I will check. I spray my molds with Frankford Arsenal Drop out Mold Release and that takes care of sticky molds. It also spray my weed guard pins when pouring jigs. It makes a big difference. Thanks again, Tim
smalljaw
Tim, now that we know you use mold release, did you ever think that maybe just a little bit of it may begetting on the wire? I doubt that is the problem you're having but it doesn't hurt to check, just a tiny bit on a wire could cause that problem.
faster u fool
Hey guys new here..I've been reading all post and you guys throw down some great info. I am getting ready to start making my own poison tail swim jigs and would love to make the mold into a spinnerbait mold as well. I think this one looks amazing and is what I was hoping they would look like. Could you post some pics of how the mold was modified to do make it work. The baits we use out here in the bays and oceans the guys want to chrage you a bucket full of money, as much as 12.99 for a spinner bait. Thanks so much in advance. Chris. sdsaw
I wonder if it could also be the lead that he is using. I remember sagacious educating me on how soft and hard lead have different shrink properties after they cool but I can't find that post. It was a few years or more ago. psv
I wonder if it could also be the lead that he is using Most likely. I had the same issue couple times and the problem was hard lead mix ( I usually mix pure lead with hard one). I just simply added more soft lead to the mix to fix it. I checked every head since then to make sure they are 100% OK before painting. "If you powder paint the bait, when curing in an oven seems to reset the hook and wire and become solid once cooled." Not everytime , some of the bad heads were painted and baked before I found out the problem with loose wire. BassBull
I have noticed that when I close up the wire going thru the hook eye to tight I would get a loose feeling in the wire. Try and not to make that connection tight. In other words leave it a little more open and see if that helps.
Glaucus
Try bending the "J" end of the spinnerbait frame into an "S" shape. This will anchor the wire and keep it from loosening.

Welcome Faster, I am new here too. It's hard to believe guys will pay 13.00 for a spinnerbait. It's no wonder this sight is so successful with prices like that.
