brendandrage
Hi all, I have been powder painting the spinnerbaits for a while now and I am using a powder pot and heat gun. Problem is I seem to be painting half the hook shaft as well, is there a way of easily cooling the hook shaft so it does attract the paint? Thanks for any help. reeves
Brendan, Your problem is you are getting too much heat on the hook. This is why I don't care to use a heat gun, you are unable to see where the heat is hitting the lead. With a propane torch I can see exactly where the flame is hitting on my lead and keep it from hitting the hook or the wireform. I know a lot of members prefer the heat gun over the propane and it just takes time to learn and become comfortable with the heat source you are using. Bottom line: you won't have powder sticking to the hook if it doesn't get hot enough. Hope this helps you. George
Jig Man
I do the same as reeves on spinnerbaits. That is the only way I know to keep the hook cool enough to not attract the paint.
MuskyGary
You can always tape the shaft, I know this takes a lot of time.
GCD
I use the toaster oven method on my jigs and get paint on the hook shaft as well, most of the time it doesn't matter because the plastic grub will cover it up... but for the jigs that it does matter, I simply scrape it off with a utility knife... takes about 30 seconds to do a hook. smalljaw
Before you begin to paint, take the time and use aluminum foil and put around the hook shaft, and you don't have to make it tight, just a simple pice to put around the hook to keep the hook from getting hot and then pull it off and dip your bait then simply wipe off the excess that sticks to the hook. You will always get paint on the hook but as long as it's not hot you will be able to just wipe it off.
