siebler_custom_baits
OK Guys i need major help. I need to make a mold that will produce a 1/4"by 1/4" lead weight for the new sr swimbait. Scot said it would be idea to have the mold be a 1/4" deep by 1/4" wide then be like a ft long and have notches to break each 1/4" piece apart. I also thout of just a bunch of 1/4" cubed cavities. So the question is how to make the mold. i have heard of wood. What type of wood do i use and do i need to seal it or anything? thanks. Coley
Bolt two pieces of wood back to back and drill a 1/4" deep hole with a 1/4" bit. Drill in the seam between the two pieces. Drill as many as you want. When you unbolt you will have your weights. Use a hard wood such as oak, it will char, but won't catch on fire. If you have any overflow or flash around the top sand off with a belt sander before un bolting. Wear a dust mask. Coley
siebler_custom_baits
The weights Must be Square. Sorry i forgot to mention that.
Coley
OK, try it this way. Do the same thing I mentioned in above post except use a 3/16" bit. Unbolt and place a 1/4" piece of steel keystock in the opening between the pieces and tighten it in a vice, this should square it up. Triton Mike
Go to my website www.geocities.com/spotcountry and click on articles then Making a Spinnerbait mold. Just substitute something the size that you need in place of the spinnerbait. T Mike
clemmy
I've heard that oak is the thing to use, but i've no personal experience... You could take a strip of oak about 1"-2" wide, and screw down another piece (1/4" thick) on top. then take two more 1/4" thick strips, cut one into sections, and screw the sections to the second strip in 1/4" spaces, then clamp to the first piece resulting in however many 1/4" by 1/4" square cavities to pour your lead. 1/4" is pretty small, so now that I think about it I'd screw these jigs to larger pieces for easier clamping. I'd also drill a couple holes in each facing side, and put in an appropriate size cut off dowel so you don't have to worry about alignment. there you go, clear as mud! siebler_custom_baits
I really am thinking about getting away from the wood and getting an aluminum mold made. How much do you think it would cost? what might be some other options.
clemmy
I just thought of a much more elegant solution (assuming you or a friend has a router, although you could work it with a table saw): Take a strip of oak 1/4" thick, and use a 1/4" dado bit to route a series of grooves in your stock. set your table saw or router to a 1/4" depth. Screw this to a second hunk of oak. then clamp this to a third piece. Actually it would be pretty easy to do the same with aluminum, you'd just need some 1/4" alum. stock and have someone mill 1/4" by 1/4" notches in it. Then clamp it together with a couple more pieces of alum. The nice thing is you wouldn't have to align it each time, it wouldn't matter...
