Heat Stabilizer?

Recommended Posts

Just started using a presto pot for pouring. One thing I noticed is my color changing (getting darker) as I pour through a batch. I'm only doing 2 cups at a time right now but the change is enough to notice. Are you guys using heat stabilizer to keep your colors consistent throughout the batch, and if so, how much and how often?

What brand of plastic are you using? Calhoun's already has the heat stabilizer in it. Also, what temp are you cooking your plastic? You might be running too hot. Do yourself a favor and get yourself a digital infrared thermometer. You can keep a very good watch on your temp this way. Remember, as you reduce the level of your plastic in the pot the temp rises, so adjust your temp to compensate. Sounds to me like you're scorching the plastic. Hpoe this helps, JIM

I have an ir thermometer. I'm running calhoun plastic right about 320 or so. I'm not sure where the presto senses it's temp from but shouldn't the thermostat keep it pretty close to what it's set at regardless of how much plastic is in the pot?

It doesnt make any difference what plastic you use, they all have heat stablizer in them, Calhoun has a tad more.

Heat stabilzer burns off in about 30 mins so you need to add heat stabilizer about every 30mins to an hour to keep it from turning yellow(burning), The smoke you see coming from the plastic when cooking it IS the heat stabilizer.

to help prevent plastic from scortching add heat stabilizer as mentioned above, or make sure you have a mixer in your pot.

I have the mixer running all the time. How much stabilizer do you add for how much plastic?

Thanks Del. Now that's something I didn't know. I did not know that the stabilizer burns off that quickly. It explains why I can't keep white from scorching, no matter what temp I'm running it at. Well, something else to buy :D

I have a medicine dropper that you can get from the dollar store. I add 1/2 tsp. before I heat the plastic and then another 1/2 tsp. every half hour (per 2 cups). Yesterday I did some multi color pours and I had a pot of pearl white going for 7 hours and I had no yellowing. Also, no presto pot is accurate as far as what the temp says on the dial. I get the plastic temp where I want it then make a mark on the dial with a paint pen (I make a mark for summertime and wintertime)

Del will sent go up in smoke as well

I'm not Del but here's what I've found if you put salt in your baits when you pour them. I add scent when I bag them and the salt in the bait causes the scent to be drawn into the plastic. I can open a bag that I bagged 3 months before and the baits are ripe with the scent. I mostly use LC scents and can't speak to the others. I would have to think that heating scented oil to 350 degrees would tend to evaporate some of it off.
