mainbutter
I had a couple Qs about people's experience pouring and fishing with stick baits: 1) Salt? How much? Have you tried variable amounts? Is there a significant difference in action and sink rate between "some" and "lots" (however you may define those amounts)? What kind of salt should I use? How can I make my own "ultra fine" salt? 2) Scents? Are most commercially available stick baits (i.e. senkos) scented? Do you believe it makes much of a difference in catching fish? If I were to use it, when in the process of making a stick bait (or I suppose any soft plastic lure) do I add the scent? How much is needed for a single-bag batch (10 5'' stick baits or similar)? 3) Also, in my experience with fishing senkos, they get torn up pretty easily when wacky rigged. I heard people use rubber o-rings to extend the life of them (put the o-ring around the middle of the lure, and thread the hook between the o-ring and lure, so you're not piercing any soft plastic and creating tears). This past open water season I bought some o-rings I thought would work but they're way too small for the senkos or similar diameter stick baits. Is there a size you guys would recommend? I'd love to extend the life of my baits come next open water season. Thanks for any tips!!
daveh
salt adds weight. the more salt you add the faster they sink. i use dels fine salt and the recipe on his site for sticks. you can experiment with differant amouts of salt. you can always remelt and start over. i add scent after i cook the plastic and to the finished baits. i use about a half of eye dropper to 4oz of plastic. once again you can experiment it won`t hurt if you add to much or not enough.use oil base scent only. i use the o rings i bought from bass pro shops they work great. i also hook threw the bait . if you tear it up you can remelt it. once you start pouring you don`t need to worry about extending the life of you baits. you will pour so many you will never run out. longhorn
This is a very good product. Eliminates having to roll the o-ring on the senko and it's aluminum. My link I think the o-rings are #5 or #6 I make my salt in the blender...it will get as fine as you want it. There is a standard senko formula on here somewhere. I have it at the shop. If someone doesn't give it I'll post it later....fishing tomorrow Edited January 5, 2010 by longhorn
