smalljaw
I did some baitfish colored spinnerbaits yesterday with the smoke powder paint and I was mad...at first. This was the first time using the stuff and after doing the first bait it was black, no difference, well maybe a tad bit lighter an no gloss otherwise it was black, so I thought oh well I'll go ahead and cure them anyway and just make them black short arm spinnerbaits for night fishing or in dirty water but that all changed after I was done curing them, it turns out that it did indeed turn to smoke, which is why I'm posting this, so if anyone uses it and thinks they got black paint, they didn't, it reminds me of the veined powder paints, they come out a soloid color until you cure them. After this I used the copperhead paint I got for the first time, just to see how it works and it works the same way as the smoke, it's really dark but the color appears after the curing process, its kind of strange but I think they should have some sort of warning on the jar saying that in order for the true color to appear, the bait needs to be cured, I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this? And like I said, if you are using it for the first time, don't get upset at first, it will change after curing.
tmosth
I too tried the smoke powder paint for the first time yesterday. I coated some test jigs and after coating they looked like black paint . I then placed them in my oven @ 350 for 20 min. They still came out black. My experience is different than yours. Got mine from T J's Tackle. I don't know what to think now. Any ideas?
smalljaw
Tmosth, this is one of those colors that seems to benefit from a white base coat, very light on the base coat so you don't get too much paint on the bait. The lures I did were a baitfish color and they had white one them already when I used the smoke, they still were black but when I cured them they came out as a smoke color, so try the white base coat and it should help.
