clemmy
Okay going through the loose sheet that SP sent me out, and the sheets of nature scales, barbed wire etc. are great with their examples. But the other sheets are just listings of colors. Now the more common ones I can figure out by going to sites such as Barlows, but how do you know what the heck these colors are? For example, how do "glitter shadowstrands" skirting pads differ from their regular metalic glitter skirting? How does "neon" glitter differ from their normal glitter? I'm so confused! I've heard that they've started charging for samples now too, but I'd feel bad asking for 20 variations each of five colors that I think might make up the perfect bluegill scheme for example, even if free. And some sound like outstanding possibilities for color scheme's I can picture in my mind, but their non-standard colors, so I'd have to order a thousand of them. Sure, that's possible if I figure to go into production business, but it's hard to tell without a picture! an example:Pumpkin/Forest Glo., Black what the heck does that look like? I bet it's a good match with Lt. Green//Green Crystal, Black, another color I'd need to order a 1000 pads to find out what it looks like! Sorry for the rant, just getting frustrated to match what's in my head.. Seriously how do you guys deal with this?
Markell
clemmy, I have a hard time buying that stuff even when I have photos of each color. I wish I could buy a sample pack that consisted of 1 layer of each color sold. But I would just get them mixed up and order a bunch of the wrong color! WidowMaker
Youre not alone. I just stick to basic colors. Black/Red Shadow Strands looks like solid Black silicone thats been deliberately hit by Red overspray from an air gun. The flake appears to be a powder that lies adhered to the surface of the silicone than actually imbeded into the material itself. The regular metallic of course looks like standard flaked skirting material. I think a lot of these guys prefer to sell to larger operations. To guys who will visit the physical location of their operations, view the various color samples and make out color charts while they are there. Sometimes you can send them samples of a color you want matched and they will go through their inventory and send you materials that match your samples. I wonder if a person could get some high quality colored pancils and mix the various colors needed and then send the examples to some of these guys. They carry thousands of colors and im sure they could come close to finding something that would match.
dtrs5kprs
If confused on a color just give them a call. They have always been able to help me sort through the color charts. Also helps to keep a Barlows or Living Rubber Co catalog handy when looking at the Skirts Plus colors. The color pics in the Barlows, or the on-line Living Rubber colors are basically the same as the Skirts Plus.
topher
I had the same problem reading the skirts plus price list. I kind of figured it out, then I got a hold of some better prices from Hatfields, and Keyser. I figured out that going thru these other places will save 4 cents per 40 strand skirt. Now a lot of the guys here use about 60 to 100 strands for their custom baits, and that would save a lot of money. I suggest that you call Dennis Hatfield @ 616 677 5215, or Keyser (lure components.com) @217 964 2110. These guys don't have as many styles, but you buy by the pound or half pound. With better prices.... Hope this helps.....Chris
dtrs5kprs
Just a note...the silicone from Keyser and Hatfield is a different grade (not different quality). Hatfield is thicker, more like the old Lunker Lure rattleback skirts (a good big jig skirt). Keyser seems to have less "life" in my opinion. I buy basic colors from SP, pick up accents form the retailers.
topher
I do agree, SP does have a "livelier" skirt, my philosophy on the matter is that 95% of anglers don't think about it, and won't know the difference. If I were making baits for myself, I would probably like the SP stuff better... Chris
