FishingBuds
I would like to custom color some winding checks, I figure using epoxy(high build for thinner coats) If so how can I apply the color to the check with it on a surface(glass or card board) and it not bond itself to when dried? or should I attatch the check to the rod and apply color that way? Whats the trick?
Mattman
If I were going to try something like that... I'd lay the check upside down. I'd place masking tape over it and with a sharp Exacto I'd trim around the OD of the check. Then I'd have a back to the check that would allow me to place the check on a mini pedestal. I'd get a chunk of dowel or rod blank and drill a hole in a piece of scrap wood. The dowel would go in the hole. On top of the dowel I'd put a piece of double back tape or silicone or some such thing. That would hold the check up on the pedestal. I'd hopefully find a can of spray paint at an autoparts store that was the color I wanted. A light spray of primer, a couple sprays of color, and then some automotive clear. Duplicolor is a brand that is pretty common around here. Possibly airbrush with Createx paint and then auto clear. Permagloss may be another good clear option. Epoxy would probably be my last choice, mostly because it takes too long to set up and is so thick. The problem with all of this is so many checks are aluminum. And aluminum doesn't tend to hold paint well.
FishingBuds
Thanks for the tips matt, I'll look into the auto paint
rhahn427
Why not just color the epoxy and make an epoxy winding check right on the rod?
