smalljaw
Hey all, I was wondering if its possible to put a screw lock in a mold in place of the weed guard, I want to make a jig with the screw lock but I want the collar on i for a skirt. If it would work, what do I have to do to the mold in on order to pour it as I'm sure you just can't put the screwlock in because the lead will flow out. I do pour a few small finesse jigs with a wire weed guard but I don't think the same process will work for the screw locks, any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. Here's something I have been working on; My link and here's a finished bait; jig & screw . A friend tried to modify some jigs that did not have a weed guard. Drilled out a hole with a 1/8" bit and then inserted the spring like you see in the first pic, securing it with epoxy. You can use anything smaller than that 1/8", but I would not go larger. A bit of a PITA, but it did work. Then later I purchased a few screw locks from Do It to try another method and using epoxy or Super Glue Gel works pretty well to secure them in the base pin hole of any Do It mold. Assuming you already have a mold, insert the base pin and pour them while the pin is in place. Once the mold cools, pop the jig out and insert your keeper, gluing it in place. Then paint and dress the jig as desired. If you are gonna modify an existing jig, follow the prior instructions.

I used to do this way before they came out with the Do-It screw locks on all of my molds, and still do it to the molds that don't accept a screw lock, as long as the mold will accept a 1/8" base hole pin. Get your self some copper or stainless hitch hikers, clip them on your hook, and put the hook in the mold where it's supposed to go, and put the hitch hiker in the weedguard hole. Put a drill bit into the hitch hiker, close the mold and pour your lead. No flash, just go and paint your jig. It will never fall out unless you break it off. The stainless steel hitch hikers are a bit stronger than the copper ones. If you want more info PM me.

macstackleman
Ok, I thought of this last year and feel I have it perfected. Also feel like I can contribute to this awesome site. I use the poisontail mold. modified to accept Mustad needlepoint 91768BLN and 38108BLN hooks. We filled in the weedgaurd groove about 1/4in from the head with Loctite liquid weld. This is a two part epoxy that is easy to work with. Mix epoxy, let set in mold for 10 minutes and then set in place the eye, flush with mold. This eye is a stainless steel sinker eye from Barlows, part # 451176 size 0. After it sets about a hour you can smooth out any rough spots so mold will close flush. Wait overnight to use lead into mold. Now when molding lay hook in mold then the eye and close to pour. I came up with the eye because I wanted the spring to swivel away from hook point for a bigger bite, also if spring breaks jig is still in operation. I use Yum craw papi's, Netbait paca craws, and zoom speed craws as trailers with great results. The owner centering spring pin works great but find it easier to screw hitchiker into plastic then snap onto jig then rig texas style. Heavy cover hide point deeper than if in light cover, thats just common sense. Oh one more thing!! Machine a groove from out of the hook eye area to accept wire. Now you have a awesome spinnerbait head and option to texas rig a 4inch curl tail to flip this spinnerbait into heavy cover!!!! Oh ya it works great. Spinnerbait I use regular nickle spinnerbait hook. Thanks and hope this was some help.

EironBreaker
A friend of mine gave me a piece of rod that was machined on the end to screw into the center of the hitch-hiker. Plugs the weed guard slot perfectly and you can slip the hitch-hiker over the hook so it is positioned perfectly every time. Nothing to clean up, just unscrew the rod and paint. A buddy of his owns a machine shop and cut it for me.

cadman
What size hitch hiker are you guys using? Cadman, Matt do either of you guys have any pics of the setup in a mold? PM me your e-mail and I will send you what I got. 1/8" outside diameter max hitch Hikers. I think Barlows and everybody else calls them out as (.13) diameter. One of the shops in Springfield has them so when the snow melts, I'm gonna give my PTs a new look.
