bigriver
Ok, I did a quick search for this subject and came up with nothing. Are there any guys out there Heating/bending hooks to fit into molds? I'd like to heat/bend a 60 deg hook to fit into a 30 deg mold. Hook's made from .057-.060 wire. Thanks. Certain hooks you can bend, like hooks that are tempered but if they are forged they will most likely break and its much better to use a vise and elbow grease to bend the hook rather than heat, by heating the hook you change the temper of the hook and it'll be forever weak and may break easily. Jig Man
I make 45° into 90° and 28° into 60°. A pair of needle nose pliers and a gentle bend one way. Don't go too far or try to go back.
Ogajiga
If the hook snaps at the elbow, a shank bend with pliers on the hook portion inside the head often works for me. Depending on the mold, maybe bending to 45* might be enuf to fit. I don't like to heat either. Edited February 5, 2010 by hawnjigs
GDille
I have made several knives, when I temper the knives I get them very very hot, then dip them in oil until they cool, too make the blade so it is not too hard, you heat it slightly, not even to blue hot and let it cool with out water or oil. I have done this with hooks also. but I made the hooks into hat pins.
pirkfan
I've been able to bend some Mustad hooks without heating them. I'm currently in search of the perfect hook for Shad 9 heads with swimbaits. The albacore guys around here troll with relatively small baits (4 inch) on 1 1/2 or 2 oz heads. Using Mustad 91715 7/0 hooks puts the hook point too far back in the bait and interferes with the tail action. Bending the eye of a 34184 hook to 90 degrees gives you a shorter shank hook, doing the same with a 34185 can yield an even shorter shank. Then it's trial and error to see which hook size and modification works best. Usually there is no problem with a single modification, and once the jighead is molded, the modified bend is cast into and supported by the lead. However occasionally one will snap off when changing the bend. Ok, I did a quick search for this subject and came up with nothing. PaBasser
I bend hooks using my Little Blue Bender. I don`t heat the hooks. As others have said you have to test the hooks from different companies. Every once in a while I still get a few hooks that break, but not often.
