FishingBuds
I'm wanting to turn my butt handle end on the mandrel with the handle assembly and I need to find or make a butt plug, I have no measurment yet but at least .4375 to .625 size. Im wanting to keep the same match with the last rubber piece on the handle, I purchased the ones from mudhole and they are .25 inch and thats way to small, should i make one or is there someone that offers them in the sizes I need? You're talking about a rubberized cork plug, right? Ya...Mudhole burned me on that deal too years ago. The description and photo was a tapered plug. What I got was a 1/4" straight diameter plug. I started making my own and will continue to do so. I'm a very quick typer and I can make a plug in a shorter time than I can type out the description of doing it. Its fast, its easy, and its the same exact material the butt of the grip is made out of. With a circle template I find the size circle that is just over the diameter of the hole in the butt of the grip. I trace that on a rubberized cork disk. With an X-Acto chisel I cut out the circle in roughly an octagon. Maybe a ten sided (don't know the name of a ten sided shape) shape. With a sanding block with 80 grit paper on it I smooth out the plug just leaving the circle I traced. I lay the plug on its side and with the chisel plunge a cut around the diameter near the middle of the cylinder. Then I set the cylinder on its end with the drawn circle and with the chisel plunge straight down to my previous cut. This leaves a section that can go inside the blank. I glue that plug into the hole in the butt. After the epoxy sets up I trim it off with a razor blade and sand smooth. I also bought a set of tapered plug cutters years ago. I've used them once. Mattman
yep exactly what has happen, in the blue highlite matt are you cutting the plug in half? Nope. Kind of making a stepped plug. My rod blank comes to within about 1/8" of the end of the grip. So, my plug needs to fit the diameter of the hole, and then have a step to fit the diameter of the rod blank. What I am doing in the blue is creating the shoulder for that step. I plunge around the diameter of the plug to a depth of about 1/8". Then I stand the plug up and cut down to that previous cut and remove material. Looks like a big fat thumbtack when I'm done.
