Piscivorous Pike
TV caught my eye last night. Again Larry Dahlberg has either taught me something or stimulated a new idea or concept for me. I took notice because I am in the process of combining several new ideas and uncommon techniques into a system or process that I hope two things will come of it, that I can make a good mold and easily. to better make an RTV mold and to make a better an RTV mold. If I suceed I will post a how to. But the Dahlberg presentation I saw is very different and I have not seen anything like it on TU. What do you think? In this case Mr. Dahlberg wanted a larger Rapala giant shad rap. He used the one he had and made a clamshell RTV mold. He buried the lure in a block of RTV and made a slot shaped spue on the top and from that he extended some cuts fore and aft of the sprue and then wrestled the model out of the RTV block. He had made clamshell mold capable of making a lure in the round. That is where he did something strange but unique. He put the RTV mold in an air tight container and poured in, submerging the mold in orderless mineral spirits, basically that is paint thinner. In a day or two he took it out. The RTV had absorbed or reacted to the chemical and had expanded and grown to be what looked to me 1/3 more larger! He then used a casting resin and cast a new and larger bait in the expanded RTV. That expanded RTV obviously is fragile and not permament. After finishing the flashing and sprue from the new bigger lure he used this first born cast to make a new RTV mold of the bigger lure. It really caught my attention because the thing I am working on now is a copy of a commercial bait. I want it larger. Carving or making a bigger one poses a problem for me because of the details I would have difficulty in hand making. Clever? I think so. I love learning something new. Heres another way to do a bait, I will use a Senko 5" as an example. the bait is loaded with salt, salt absorbs moisture leave the bait in some water or oil let it swell to the size you want, then take it out and mold it. that being said you can make a mold of a commercial bait, pour the bait in your new mold with lots of salt and do the same thing with the oil/water. when its the size you want you can mold your newly sized bait. There are also plastic out there that will grow with oil/water. kids have them in there toys, the stuff toy they put in the water and it grows 10x the size. Just a thought.. dabskie
I saw basicly the same thing on the History Channel about Bigfoot,,,to create a hoax,,,he made a RTV mold of his foot,,and put it in the mineral sprits and ended up with an 18 inch mold to cast a Sasquach print with all the ridges and marks of a real foot..Would have convinced me,,,,(not that I beleive in Bigfoot ,,,,,, ),,,,,,,,So I"m sure it would work with baits. dabskie
