bluegrasslover
Has anyone tried making molds for lead and if so how I saw a nice tutorial somewhere just the other day but I can't find it now. It might have been in this forum someplace. Basically, it used Durham's Water Putty as the mold material in a small plastic cup. The bait, like a spinner bait, was held in place in the cup by cutting slits vertically on the cup then sliding the bait into place. A nail or something was used to create the sprue. Maybe somebody else knows where this tutorial is. One thing I did read is that a mold of this type needs to be COMPLETELY dry or molten lead go boom. tacklecrafter
I have a book by C. Boyd Pfieffer called Tacklecraft. In the book he shows you how to build POP molds for soft plastics and jigheads. I stole this off of half.com for about 5.75 shipped. I also found a copy at my local library. It was made in the 70's I believe. I know in the books it states exactly what greg mentioned. Molds must be free from all moisture. They will crack or explode. I made dumbell eyes for flies and it worked well I let it set for 2 weeks to dry to be extra careful good luck.

I have, I made an aluminum jewelry type mold curing frame but with bolts to clamp it then used contenti silicone disks cut up and cured in my oven. POP and durhams make terrible molds, not worht the time for lead.
bamarocks
you can use bondo to make your mold. it does pretty good but you have to pour in small quantities and let it cool off some because it starts getting soft when it gets hot. i have several molds made from it and its very simple to do. crawdaddy
I agree that POP is a waste of time. I made a couple molds and the end result is just not worth it. Even after curing for a long time you still get castings with gaps and holes.
