Newbie Mold Making Question

Recommended Posts

New to the site and bait making. When making a mold, what are y'all using to tack the master down before pouring the pop, dwp, or resin over it? Tried using glue all last night and it didn't work too well....baits released and began floating to the top when I tapped the mold box on the counter to get the bubbles to rise. Thanks in advance for the help. This site is really cool.

I use a few drops of cheap crazy glue. Some guys use double sided tape.

I use loctite superglue when making a mold in a plastic container. Works well. Make sure you wash your bait with alchohol to remove any oils before gluing them down. Lately Ive been making mold boxes out of 1/4" luan. With them I spray a HEAVY coat of clear enamel in the bottom and lightly press my baits in place. When the paint dries the baits are held firmly in place.

I build my mold box out of shiny cardboard, like electronic retail packing boxes, glue them to gether with hot glue.

Two layers on the bottom and I drive straight pins though the master. It also allows in some cases to lift portions of the lure off the bottom for full suround of the pop, rtv or dwp.

I coat the cardboard with brushed on Vaseline. A quick pass of a torch lighter takes the ridges out of the Vaseline.

I fill up to the pin heads, long pins, and after the set begins and they wont move I twist them and pull them out while twisting.

I have also used two sided stick 'em up tape

Both these methods preserve the master.
