A Fix For Sticky Baits!

Recommended Posts

I have been told that the cause of sticky baits are because the plastic was not mixed well enough. So I made sure the plastic was mixed very good, turning the one gallon jug up side down and shaking vigoriosly for several minutes. Putting the jug up to light,I can tell there are no plastis remaining on the bottom of the jug. And after all that I still get sticky baits. Can a person soak these in worm oil for a long period of time and will the baits soak up the oil and not become sticky any more.

I put them in a bag with some worm oil and in a couple days the oil was gone and the baits were not shiny and slick, maybe a little less sticky I there a fix for this?

Thanks for any help I can get.

Are you letting them set up for a day or two before bagging?

Some I have, but did not no that you needed to I made some two color tubes today and put worm oil on them and brought them in the house to show off to my wife who also fished with tubes, two hours later they were sticky again. Is that normal?

Iv'e made hard baits for years,so this is new to me,I'd appreceate any help.

Let them sit for 24 hours THEN package them up with worm oil.

Thanks,I did not no that the plastic had to sit 24 hours before putting oil on them and packaging them. As you probably can tell I am new to poring plastics, but I'm having a lot of fun with this new hobby.

Thanks for your help.

You do not have to wait 24 hours before using worm oil on them. I use baking sheets and spray them with worm oil and lay or roll the worms in the oil when I demold them. The purpose of waiting 24 hours is for the plastic to fully setup otherwise if you bag them immediately and if they are bent they will stay that way and have kinks in them. If you lay them out on a tray and lay them straight and wait 24 hours they will stay striaght. As far as the tackiness to your baits I also do think its mixing. Did you take the plastic from a large container and pour the plastic into smaller jugs? If so you may not have mixed it enough before transferring it. Pour it all back in the larger jug and remix it all Also you need a mixer on a drill to mix your plastic especially if its in a 2 1/2 gallon or larger jug at least with calhouns in my experiencce. What I would do temporarily is take something long and scrape the bottom of the jug because the plastic will settle. It is white so unless the jug is empty it would be very hard to tell if there is any packed on the bottom of the jug. Hope this helps

I second this line of thinking, either pre transfer was not mixed completely or worst case scenario would be the batch may be bad from the supplier, but please don't call out the supplier on this thread as my intension is to only give you some scenario’s to consider if you feel it may be from the source by all means just contact your supplier as from all I've read about the majority of them is that they will correct the issue for you.

The jug was a one gallon jug that was purchased from the dealer,I'm positive that it is well mixed as it can be.Iv'e held it up to the light and can see the whole bottom of the jug is clear. Will this keep them from being usable, where they will stick to branches and etc. what would you do with the baits?

Thanks to all the members at this great site,I learn something about every day when I log on.

There is no fix for these baits. The compounds were not mixed good it sounds like (or were not there). Without everything "in the mix", the baits will never firm up.

Sorry!!!!!!!

Jim

I had a similiar issue recently. I got my plastic and thought I mixed it up well but not good enough and i apprently just skimmed plastisizer off the top and the baits were supersoft and the plastic was literally like water. The baits were a bit strange smelling too. I was told to dump the plastic back in from a 1 gallon jug I had filled back into the large container I had and I did so. After mixing it all for about 15 minutes I poured a cup and heated it and the baits came out perfect. I asked earlier if you transferred your plastic from a large container to a smaller one becasue you may have taken the plastisizer from the large container and used it for your baits and the oher imporatant elements are missing. If thats not it then I would call the place wher you got it from. .

There are really only two reasons you get tacky baits:

1. Not mixed properly

a. It sounds like you did

b. Your supplier may have sent you an un-balanced mix

2. You're not cooking the plastic correctly

a. Underheating will give you tacky, slightly milky baits

b. Overheating will give you tacky, slightly smoky baits
