Swan Lake Montana Closed!

Recommended Posts

I already contacted my TU buddy in MT about this, and my family. I need to complain. Hate Federal blundering, polically motivated land management stinks. My back ground in these matter knows when "something is rotten in Denmark" and Montana for that matter too.

Swan Lake is a difficult lake for Pike but has abundant and good fishing, if you know what you are doing. Good trout, salmon, macs and bulls too.

Only one USFS launch site on a lake 12 miles by 1 mile! The rest is private with no access. I have been fishing it, studying it for years. I have had a career in public administration (unfortunately not in reacreational resources). I have an University level educational back ground in wildlife management, I know the science behind it quite well, and I once live on the water, this lake was my passion, I studied it and finally figured it out. I bought side scan sonar and mapped it. UW cameras and watched it. Joined TU and learned how to make a special lake specific lure that is a killer. Spent time and $$ making the tackle, bought more rods and specific equipment and planned two years for a trip this May 1, which is the local prime spring fishing season.

I missed a couple years because of health issues so I anticipated this everyday, enough, it is an obsession now and my goal in life. Yesterday it went bad.

The USFS decided to close the only public launch and ramp on the lake during the best fishing , worst weather for paving, to repave the lot and ramp. They effectively closed, except for some private homes, the lake to sportsman!!! That had to be some political environmental twist to that as they published in some unheard of media and now have removed the acess to the best trophy fishing in the area. They are closing the ramp to repave it, dependant on weather, (it will rain now until end of June). A month to pave a very small boat ramp and parking lot slightly bigger than my yard! (a work week in good weather at the most! Maybe three days at best) BTW- it easily could have be done while open, splitting the work areas like a highway construction So, who are they kidding? It is an obvious grab by someone with unrighteos relationships to the public landlord to limit the fishing during that period the best are taken!

I now am going to loose the 3rd year and much money preparing for the trip. But I dont care about the money. I cannot get the time back, life moves on and mine does not have that many years left. I am out of patience.

Hope my connection can find me some access. This luck is why I will never play a lotto or gamble. If it werent for bad luck I would have none. My nightmare.

I want to fish that lake May 1. How?

Your sympathy, I feel. Thanks, my TU friends, for listening.

PP- this is something I can sympathise with, sound's like a conspiracy to me - Here we have a lot of problems, but no one owns lakes or beaches here, and public access is guaranteed just about anywhere except native land, where you need a permit!!

As for your luck, you are doing better than me, I have been trying to contact Shane ('Montana Fishing Rods') for six months - he owes me 2 rods - I'm assuming he is your "TU buddy in MT"?????????????????????????

Hope you get more satisfaction from Montana than I have. Pete

My Montana Buddy, my brother, not SHANE, found me access, a private, semi open to the public mini marina.

I am here, or there, depending on your perspective and another unforseen problem stands between me and the pike.

It snowed the last three days. Hey, it is the month of May and the flowers are out, gardens are planted and this morning there was 6" of snow on top of my boat and everything else that is outside!

The cold front has thoroughly put the fishing down. The water is now mountain snow melt and the warm bay is 39 degrees!!

I can't win it seems.
