Jig Hook Sizings?

Recommended Posts

I ordered another jig mold today.

6 cavity production 1/8oz Do-It tapered tube jigs

They recommend an Eagle Claw 570-575, but offered no other recommendations.

I won't fish Eagle Claw(POS IMO) so I looked and looked for similar hooks, but couldn't find a chart that offered size comparisons between manufacturers.

Do you guys know of a link I could add to my favorites to take the guess work out of buying jig hooks other than what's recommended? There has to be something out there that clarifies and lists these things as compatable to the molds

The 570 is a light wire hook with a 90 degree bend. Other manufacturers hooks are made in the same or similar wire with different bend styles. An example site would be Barlows Tackle. They lump all the 90 degree wire hooks on one page on their website. Check out the link below. Cut and paste it into your browser window if it is not "clickable".

I was going to suggest the same thing Smallie did. If you don't like to look on the computer, call them up for their catalog. It is the best source of information anywhere I've found. Like Smallie said their hooks are grouped together in the catalog as well. You will find that Mustad and Eagle Claw are very interchangeable. Gamakatsu is usually not and rarely fits any Do-It mold unless the mold is modified. For all other questions ask them in this forum, and somebody will have an answer, as someone probably has already tried it. I have over 100 molds and majority of all the hooks in Barlow's catalog, so I can always check to see if a particular hook will fit. One other thing, you can also take many hooks that are 60 degrees and bend them 90 degrees and vice-versa if you like a particular hook. A list of all the hooks that will fit certain molds, would take years of work to compile.

In addition to the good info already posted, I can offer that two decent upgrade quality choices that will fit are Sickles and 32746 in the sizes specified on the mold. Downsizing to 1/0 is possible, but upsizing to 4/0 or larger will require modification. I like Sickles performance & value, but Matzuo hooks quality control is not up to Ultra Point standards. I consider 3275x "Classic" Mustads equivelant to 570 in quality.

Can you expand on or explain what you mean here in more detail please?

Thanks.

John

I've used Matzuo sickle bends with flukes for years.

Sometimes the hooks are a bit brittle as opposed to Mustad or Owner.

Some of the eyes aren't completely closed and you have to mash it with a pair of pliers to cinch it down.

I bought a 300 count bag of 5/0 EWG hooks a few years ago and found a few that didn't even have a hook point.

I still like Matzuo, but want the Mustad or Owner for my jigs.

Are you planning to stick with the same wire thickness of the hooks?

If you don't mind paying the premium price, I have been happy with the Owner brand hooks, but I've been very pleased with all the Mustad black nickle hooks that I've tried, especially considering the lower prices and resistance to corrosion when used in saltwater

I'm not sure about that particular mold, but you may have to stick to a similar thickness of hook or modify the mold for a heavier hook.

For all you guys that enjoy this lure making hobby, I highly recommend that you get yourselves an inexpensive set of 6" dial calipers that measures in inches like these:

If you need to know the size in metric, you either divide or multiple by .03937 to get the mm equivalent.

The heavy wire Owner 5313 1/0 will fit the 1/8 tube head mold, but larger sizes will require deepening the eye slot and shank channels for a perfect fit.

As for Sickle vs. Ultra Point quality comparison, Ultra Points almost never have defects, Sickles almost always. The defects can include besides the previously mentioned brittleness, open eyes, & dull points - twisted eyes and off center points among others. The defects are more annoying than terminal, & Sickles offer sharp points and good functionality for the $.
