topher
It is a pretty good unit. I got mine thru F&m reloading, they are on the web, I searched for about 4 hours to find the best price... It does the job pretty well. When you get to pouring, keep a small standard screwdriver handy, you will need it when the lead starts to drip. just turn the plunger rod back and forth a couple of times, and that will stop the dripping for a while. You also need to clean it out a every once in a while, there get to be a lot of crap in there sometimes. Make sure that you have an exhaust system right above your melter too. The lead vapors are the worst form of lead in terms of lead poisoning. The stuff will cause cancer.... Chris
Richoc
Thanks for the reply. Been pouring for 20 years now, haven't test pos. for lead yet. Just was sharing because of the free mold. Thought others maybe putting off buying one mine jump on it. Was first order with Stamina, went there becasue of the current internet offer of free shipping $100 and over orders. Found it cheaper, but went for the free shipping. Order a bunch of supplies also. Old pot melted though the center, Lee says they will fix any model still in production, so we will see. LEE is 30 mins. from here at a place I fish but you can not buy direct from them. But the funniest thing is that they are way cheaper to order from out of state, go figure.
Richoc
Is it just my new pot or are these models really noisy. 10 pound never made noises like this one dose.
Haebar
Anybody use the Lee Magnum Melter and just use ladles to pour? How does this system compare to using one of the Lee Pots with the bottom spout? Thanks, Haebar
Richoc
I don't use one now, but have in the past. For larger pours than you can make with the bottom pours, and tests. This might work for you. But what I found is that it was way to small for what I wanted it to do, not enuff lead to keep pouring large objects. I pour sinkers up to 2 lbs each. Found I am better running 2 or more hot pots for the hand ladle pouring. My arms are bad and hand pours just kills me, but I can use the bottom pours for hours. But if you are casting jigs and such, the bottom pours can not be beat. The clean flow of the lead. The added pressure of the design help fill the cavities. Also danger of spills is really almost gone. Let go of the handle and the flow stops.( on most any way) The Lees........ I like the 10lb model way better than the 20lb. Thinking of selling my 20 and it is not a year old yet. Thinking of do some mods. to see if I can get the shut off to work. As I was warned on this site it dips, alot............ More than I can stand. But the top is open wide for scooping with a ladle if you need too. And if you are in it for the long haul the RCBS pro-melt can not be beat. Big $ though. Never had a drip with this unit,( when use correctly) and the heat control is very nice. On the side , not near the heat. Top is open enuff to scoop out of. Just make sure it is up to temp. before you start to pour. Heat light indicator will turn off to let you know. The pot is coated for long life, and doesn't get rusty. Also it pours the largest pours out of the bunch. Also use a gas 160 pounder but thats for production work at the spin caster. Not really for the hobby guys. Haebar
Thanks for the info. The 10 pound unit was what I had my eye on to begin with; guess I'll get it. Why do you like it better than the 20 pound bottom pourer? Thanks, Haebar
Richoc
The unit just works better. The handle design is weighed and shuts off the flow 90%+ of the time. It is quick to heat up, has good pressure. You still get drips, mostly on heat up, the lead shrinks as it cools and lifts the needle. Easy to take apart and clean. Last one work for 15 years. More value for the money. The 20 is just a dissipointment compared to the 4-pro. or the RCBS. Tips..... You will still need a catch pan under the spout for drips.( can fold one out of Alum. foil.) Never leave unattended during warm up.( have had the entire pot on the table when getting back.) And use cleaned lead in it, will keep it problem free for years. I clean my lead in a Hot-pot before putting in to the bottom pour units. Use good soft lead, and keep a regular screw driver right there, to turn the needle/rod to stop dripps.
