Thoughts From Long Time Lure Makers Wanted

Recommended Posts

I just finished my first set of jigs painted and everything and I think I found a new hobby so many options.

I would just like to hear where you guys get your supplies from I got my first supplies from Gander Mountain but I know that they are not always the best place to get stuff from because of their prices. Who has good prices and good customer service on molds and other supplies?

I also was woundering your thoughts on using wheel weights and if not using them where to get lead from I posted the same question on the hard bait forum and was told this was a better place to ask this question.

Also I was told if you order lead through the mail you may have to pay a extra Haz. Mat. Fee anyone run into this?

Any help would be great.

Congratulations! Lure Parts Online, Jann's Netcraft, Barlows are great sources along with many others. Captain Hook's Discount Warehouse for inexpensive hooks too.....regarding lead, I wouldn't recommend mail order unless you have no scrap available, wheelweights work fine, recovered bullets too, you can cast great jigs with about any lead alloy if you pay attention to temperature, fluxing and mold prep. Another recently discovered secret for jig makers is mold release, one type is at midwayusa.com sold to help bullet casters.

I bought the lead from ebay: hard and soft and i've never paid any shipping. The sellers use USPS flat rate boxes and many of them offer free shipping. I usually order already cleaned and fluxed lead. Yes, it's more expensive (1-1.20$ per lb) then lead from scrap yard, but I don't want to deal with smoke and fire etc. It's your choice.

Lureparts - great selection & customer service. They started to ship faster under new management

Netcraft - 100% satisfaction for 10 years as a client. Very fast shipping ( expensive though)

Barlows - best prices on Do-IT molds. They have some components which are not available from first 2.

Hope it helps.

I agree with the others here that Janns Netcraft, Barlows, and Lure Parts Online are all good to deal with and you'll be able to find everything you need within thhose 3 plus hooks are better priced through Capt Hooks Warehouse. You can use wheel weights but I son't recommend them because some molds will give you problems as the weights are hard lead and require more fluxing and higher temps in order to get them to flow when melted. Finally, while there is nothing wrong with going to Gander, Cabelas, or Bass Pro Shops for some supplies, you'll do much better with price and selection using one of the tackle making specialty retailers, good luck and enjoy the hobby!!

Don't forget about the good old auction site. I have purchase many of my molds and most of all of my lead there. I have gotten absolute steals on molds here. The best way I have found is looking for group listings. Popular individual molds can go pretty high. Listings for 8-20 molds at a time usually go cheep. I usually just sell any duplicates back on the site. Hooks too. If you know what you want you can get some good deals. If I can't get what I need there I go to Barlows and Hagens. I won't use ww ever. I like to twist my sprue off and get a clean casting . Thats just my preference.

You can order bulk parts through Worth and Hagens besides the others listed, personally I find Stamina's prices a little high.

On wheel weights, man don't count em out!!!!!!!!!!!!!! get em throw out the zinc ones (one's I've seen have a Z or ZA on them) keep your pot at about 600 degrees and melt em down and flux it. Make a list of your molds and mark down what works the best in that mold. I've got molds that I can use tire weights down to 1/16 th of an ounce in others I can only use pure or a 2 to 1 mix of pure and tire weight.

For the molds you can get away with the tire weight it leaves you the pure for harder to pour molds, and yes everyone likes a clean break when taking sprues off and tire weight is a little tougher but it does come off clean, the ones that don't use a cheap file and a emory board on the sprue line and you're all set.

With prices of parts and lead, give up tire weight lead when I can get it for free NOT A CHANCE. I have never heard of a Hazmat surcharge on mailing lead to someone. Welcome to the sometimes crazy world of lure making it really is FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If there is a scrap metal recyler in your vicinity, check with them for used lead. Old pipe, roof flashings, wire sheathing, medical x-ray weights, wheel weights, salvaged shower pans, lead used to join old cast iron sewer pipe are just some of the sources at metal recylers. Just make sure it is dry before you melt it!

You all should be looking for Plumbers in the area and asking to buy their scrap lead, and pipes from old house remodeling. I made a major score with a plumber. Offer them $.05-.10 a pound more than the scrap yard, or trade some tackle for some lead if they fish. Between sinkers and jigs up to 4oz., I go through over 300 pounds a year, so I was always looking. I'm set for a few years with one plumber.
