Spinnerbait Questions

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I have a few questions regarding spinnerbaits or wirebaits for that matter. I'm considering the idea of a side business and would like to offer SBs, BBs, jigs, and vibrating jigs, maybe even some soft plastics later down the road.

1. What is a general cost margin/difference between pouring/painting your own heads vs. buying them already poured and painted?

2. What would you consider a reasonable cost/each in materials and time to paint?

3. What would you consider a reasonable cost/each if you were to buy them already poured and painted?

4. What would you consider the pros and cons to R-bend vs. Twisted-eye?

Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Tommy

The initial investment in pouring your own heads and/or bending wire is considerable and time consuming but will be cheaper in the long term if you have a reliable source for lead. Buying pre poured heads is the easiest and probably the most economic way of doing things but you basically have no say in wire diameter, type of wire, and size and brand of hook used unless you buy from a custom maker but delivery will be slower as you have to wait to have them made to your specs and it'll probably cost a bit more. I'd say if you want to just sell any kind of spinnerbait or similar bait then your best bet is to buy pre poured heads and ready made skirts but if you want to sell a quality product that is unique then you have to make your own but it is up to you on how you apprach it.

These are some of the reasons I was asking. I've found a custom outfit that can pour/paint the head w/the size wire and hooks that I want for around $1.65 each. Total cost of lure will vary depending on the skirts and blades I decide to use but I was just curious if this was a descent price for the above..?? The unit price for the heads seem a little higher than if I were to pour them myself but am wondering if the saved time would be worth it..?? Eventually, I would like to do this in house but would like to generate some revenue to pay for the equipment and supplies first. Any thoughts on that price range? Thanks for all the help and any more info is greatly appreciated.

The painted price is not out of line. It all depends if you are getting, 2d or 3d eyes if any and if there is more than one color paint. Multi-color jigs or spinner baits are very time consuming to do. Finally although not needed, but are they putting a clear coat over them as a final process. Just some of my thoughts and comments. In the long run it is cheaper to paint your own and if you can afford it pour your own. PM sent.

In a nut shell. Get ready to spend at least $500 bucks. The cheapest place I know to get wires is Mustang Wire in Okla. Buy every thing you can in 1m qyantities . Blades, skirts and ball bearing swivels if you choose to use those wil be where Ya have to yell ouch.
