Making Homemade Scent

Recommended Posts

Get your hands on fresh herring(enough to fill a 5 gal bucket). Add some coarse salt, maybe 5 lbs. Put the cover on tight and set the bucket in a place where it will get as much sun as it can. Just make sure it's outside;lol. By the end of summer the oils from the herring will float to the surface. If you can't get herring; any oily fish will do; bluefish, mackeral etc.

Does the water in homemade scents present a problem?

I was told not to let water near my plastics, because it would turn to steam when heated and cause real problems.

I know it's true with lead.

Is that true with plastics?

Mark it is true of Plastic .... NO WATER

Always oil only. WIth the homemade scent I suggested above you have to scoop the oil off the top of the water then heat it to get rid of the water. After that you should be left with only the oil.

Forgive a "dumb" question, but would the oil from sardines or tuna packed in oil work? I always drain off the oil, and it would be great if it could be used for scent.

I think you'll find that there is still some water in that as well.

So couldn't you heat the sardine oil like Nova suggested with the herring oil extraction in the post above?

You sure could but the amount of oil in one can of sardines is not going to be much. You would have to "save" the oil from quite a few cans to make it worth while.

This may be a noob question but, i just bought some scents from upperhandscents, should I add the scent before or after heating the plastic? I am assuming before so you don't get spits from the cool oil in the hot plastic.

Also do I need a full face mask like in chemistry class, or would safety glasses work?

I was thinking of blending/grinding a couple skip jacks and skimming the oil from the top of the mixture after it sits for awhile. I was wondering if any one has tried something similar before. Will the oil be okay to mix with plastisol?

Try using cod liver oil. Been using it in saltwater baits for many years and it works great. You will find that a small amount is best. I also mix a little with anise for my freshwater baits. Best way to add scent is when plastic is melted and ready to pour.Just stir in a teaspoon of scent per half pint of plastic. Works for me!

Heck , pard just go to a pharmacy and get you a bottle of anise oil (its licorice just like candy) few drops in a bag of worms grubs ect. soaks right in works great. Don't carry the oil in you tackle box. Game wardens don't like that if'n ya know what I mean.

I blended the skip jacks and put them in a bucket with water and salt. I scoop the fat and oil from the top after a few days in the backyard; It smelled, and I got green. I put the fat and oil in skillet trying to get rid of the water. Did this probably 5 times, the whole neighborhood stunk of fish. Mix the oil/fat with hot plastisol, and I got small bubbles in the plastic. The plastisol smells like fish, but the lure has some bubbles. I might try this again, but I'll use a pressure cooker to remove the water. Actually, I'm just going to use scented oils next time.
