bug11
Local tackal store are screaming for the arky jig but here's the catch, They want the wire weed guard. I've heard talk of filling the mold where the Fiber weed guard goes and then cutting a grove for the wire weed guard. I was wondering what I could use to do that. Maybe some advise so I dont messs up the mold to bad. It's a ARK-18Y 1/8oz 4 cavities Y guard & Fiber guard.
BBK
Pour them without a guard or insert in. You will get a ton of flashing where the weedguard is supposed to go, just cut that off and sand/grind it smooth. Then figure out what wire you are going to use and drill the appropriate sized hole in the weed guard spot, epoxy the wire and stick it in. And there ya go, a wire weed guard! smalljaw
Take a rubber skirt collar and insert your wire through the center, bend a hook on the wire that will be in the head, this will keep it from pulling out, now put the skirt collar with the wire in it in the mold at the base of the weed guard opening and position the wire to how deep in the head you want it and then close the mold and pour. You will get a tiny bit of smoke but it'll work and you'll have very little flashing.
sdsaw
Fill the groove with red high temp silicone then cut it off flush No need to cut a groove because the silicone will compress to the wire. ...and you won't alter your mold -Credit goes to 21xdc from past recommendations-
Basseducer
bug11, I purchased a single cavity Arky mold form Hilts molds. I did not ask for a weedless mold and I got it without the weedguard hole cut all the way through. I was then able to drill out the rest of the hole to accept a 5/64" weedguard instead of the 1/8" as usual. You could drill out to any size you like. Hope this helps. JBlaze
These were done using the method that Small jaw suggested. Requires no altering of the mold which I like. The .011 wire was a little on the flimsy side and was pretty mangled after being bit. I would use a little larger diameter wire next time. Hope this helps. Jig Man
I have had success putting duct tape over the weedguard area on both sides of the mold. I lay the wire on it and pour. I get no flash and the duct tape never even looks like it is going to melt. It's a 2 minute install and a 10 second uninstall.
bug11
Thanks everybody, the advise is helpful. I think I'll use the high temp silicon first. I would have never thought duct tape could do that. I've been pouring jig over a year now, I've learned alot but I still have alot to learn. Underground has really helped me out with all my question. Thanks again.
Crymdawg
Today I poured some Brush Jigs using the rubber collar idea. Instead of using ONE heavy strand of wire I used about 10 (TEN) strands of 10 lb. stainless wire coated with clear vinyl that is used for leaders. The only problem that I had was NOT ALL of the collar got covered all the time. And I had to cut the collars in half as a single one was too big. Any other suggestion ?? Use a brass pin in the weed gaurd slot , pour as usual, pull out the pin, then epoxy the weed gaurd wire in the hole that is left. no modification of the mold is necessary and you don't hurt the resale value of yuor mold.
