Vodkaman
You should start off simple. Carve some wood using hand tools, box cutter, sand paper, hack saw, elec' drill etc. Stuff you probably already own. Read up (search) on sealing and top coats, key words propionate, devcon, etex, Dick nites, createx (color paint). It is the sealing and the top coat that make the quality. If you enjoy the experience, then you can think about more tools. The first tool would be a quality mini drill, most use Dremel, do not skimp here, as the failure rate of cheaper drills is significant (personal experience). Brouse the gallery for patterns that catch your eye. Ask specific questions when you find problems, everyone here wants to help you.
