Pop Vs Rtv?

Recommended Posts

I want to do some prototyping (finesse worms, grubs, more...) and I'm wondering if a POP mold will work for me. I'm just not sure (from the posts I've been reading) if it will produce the detail and smooth, glossy finish I lust for. Saw a few baits that looked kind of rough from a POP mold.

I'll be making open hand pour molds, possibly moving into 2 part molds later on.

I worked worked with RTV before and of course I love it. Got a perfect mold on the first try.

Still, less than $15 for 25 lbs at Lowes for the POP.

Of course, I'd need sealant. Is wood glue really the best? Or epoxy?

i have gone threw a 10lb bucket of POP. i never got it to fully seal. if you are going to be starting with one piece molds, use fiberglass resin. i made some trick worm adn some finese worm molds and i love them. smooth shiney bait every time.

Nova suggested sealing the POP with epoxy thinned to water consistency with denatured alcohol. Mix the epoxy well first, and then add the alcohol, or the alcohol will bind with the individual parts, and the epoxy won't set.

I did that, several coats wit a fine artists brush until I got a gloss finish, and it worked beautifully. I had used carpenter's glue, but the PAM spray I use as a release agent seemed to make it gummy, and it stuck to itself, ruining my two piece molds bit by bit.
