I use window weight lead, but e-bay is a good place for lead otherwise just remember to get a hard lead or it won't last. some people use wheel weights but I wouldn't think it would last but its cheap at a local junk yard.. As far as molds and hooks I order from janns net craft or lurecraft.. anything else just ask me hope this helps...

Are you better off to buy the skirts already made or buy a tool to make them. What are the best and cheapest tools?

smalljaw
First of all DO NOT GET THE HARDEST LEAD YOU CAN FIND!!!!! Being new to pouring and trying to melt and pour hard lead will make you give it up real quick as you'll most likely end up with a bunch of incomplete pours, try to find lead ingod of some sort of pure of soft lead. I pour a mix of pure lead and wheel weight lead, like a 60/40 mix for jigs and that is plenty hard and I have never had a spinnerbait get banged up so bad the the head is dented and I've been pouring my own lead for over a decade. As for "whats the best" or the "cheapest", that is for you to decide based on how much you have to get started, you'll need a melter, round nose pliers or a wire former if you plan on beding your own wire, hooks, skirts or skirt material, blades and swivels and wire or prebent wire forms plus molds, if you buy prebent wire forms and premade skirts 200 to 300 dollars will get you strted with enough stuff to make around 50 baits give or take a few so if you are planning on doing it to save money then don't bother since the strt up costs are significant. For 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2oz spinnerbaits you can use a size 2 swivel for all 3 and a size 3 clevis for all, the clevis size is determined by the diameter of the wire you are going to use, for a 1/4oz bait I usually use .032 or .035 wire so while a #2 clevis will work fine I just use a #3 since I usually make larger baits but only a few 1/4oz, and 3/8 and 1/2oz baits I never use wire over .040 so the #3 works on those very well. Check and compare prices from Barlows, Janns Netcraft, Lure Parts Online, Lure Craft and that is just to name a few. gdowney
Smalljaw I'm glad you brought up the part about lead. I was at Gander Moutain and they sell 2 brands of pencil lead. One is a generic brand for $4.50 per pound. The other is made by Gremlin that makes sinkers. It sells for $7.99 per pound. When buying lead is lead lead, or would the Gremlin lead be better or is the price due to the name?
psv
4.50 is way to much for a lb. Check Ebay, you can get the lead 3 times ( sometimes even more) cheaper. For example: Lead link on Ebay Hope it helps

When buying lead is lead lead, or would the Gremlin lead be better or is the price due to the name? My opinion, price does not indicate quality or what is best suitable for the job. If I was going to pay double, or even $4.50 a pound, I would want a guaranteed analysis, so I would know what I was getting. Anything with 4% or more of Antimony (Antimony is what is mixed with lead to make lead hard)would be considered hard lead. My guess is wheel weights are about 1 to 2% Antimony. I think if you did some searching/researching, you should find some suitable lead for $2.00. Check out Rotometals, they show lead ingots for $1.89 lb for pure lead. For example: Lead link on Ebay Hope it helps This looks like a good deal to me, if I was needing 10 lbs of lead, I would buy this from the sound of it. I don't know nothing about the seller
M@TT
10lbs of lead will go a long way. You should get approximately 160 one ounce jigs, or 320 1/2 ounce spinnerbaits etc.
psv
I bought from time to time 25-50lb lots of lead from different Ebay sellers and most of them usually specified where the particular lot came from (soft lead pipe, wheel weights, etc). If not, I usually ask the seller before buy it. So far, so good. I prefer to buy clean lead, rather then do fluxing by myself.
gdowney
Thanks for the help guys. I didn't buy any because of the price. Gander Mountain is high here so I figured I could get lead cheaper some where else. Also I know a guy that all he does is make jig heads. Right now I can get the jigs off of him at cost till I decide what I want to do.
