brennan
Hey all: Gonna try my hand at making some spinnerbaits. Bought out a couple of kids that had a pretty nice kit for making some. However, they used snap barrel swivels for the main blade. I can't go that route. However, I have been reading on the roller vs. ball bearing debate. Anyone using roller swivels with success? Are the BB swivels hype for most fisherman? Your opinion is welcomed. Brennan
Blueriversmallie
I have used roller swivels but only on large lures 1oz. and bigger that have size 6 blades or larger. You can get 100 nice BB swivels on ebay for $20. Just bought some and they are the same as spending $47 from a supplier. Terry
smalljaw
Roller swivels are just an improved crane swivel and like anything else if you get cheap ones you'll end up with problems. I prefer Worth BB swivels, they go on all my baits and believe me when I tell you that I have tried the cheap imported ones like the 100 on ebay for 20 bucks, you will get some that work ok and you'll get some that are useless, the last time Igot imported swivels I was getting 7 out of 10 worked but the ones that did work didn't spin free enough for my liking. If you are only going to make spinnerbaits for burning or high speed retrieves then they will work for you but if you plan on slow rolling or moderate retrives you'll be dissapointed as a lot of the cheap swivels need to go pretty quick in order to spin. Go get a cheap walmart spinnerbait and see how well the blade spin when slow rolling after a few days of fishing, you'll understand why they are only a buck. Do yourself a favor and get Worth swivels or Sampo, although I really think the Worth is just as good and a lot more inexpensive than the Sampo. The guy just buys in bulk and breaks it down to smaller quanities. They are excellent

They do not produce as many revolutions per minute as a ball bearing swivel true; but who cares, as long as the blade is turning and producing flash and moving water that is all I am concerned about. Remember water is much denser than air so blades spin much easier under water. O.K. now everybody get in line to throw things at me and call me a cheap hooker. Just giving an honest opinion (course I'm always keeping an open mind also)
JSC
2 more cents worth.. GOOD BB Swivels do spin the BEST but having said that I use crane swivels 90 % of the time .. I have this little idea that you get more Vibration and a little extra "Squeak" out of them. Along with this I use extra light wire (less than .030) on my "Finese" ones (1/4 & 3/8 oz) ..(this goes back to the extra vibration factor) .. Just a couple of things to factor in. smalljaw
Nobody is going to throw things at you and call you names Lance...lol! Everyone has their own preference and if we didn't all of our baits would look and perform the same and just like JSC said, sometimes that little extra vibration caused from the additonal friction from a crane or barrel swivel can make a big difference. If you want to slow roll a spinnerbait or make a short arm spinnerbait that the blade spins on the fall then you should use a good BB swivel, I like my blades to spin freely as it keep the bait stable and a faster spinning blades give off much more flash, now weather it make a difference or not to the fish I don't know but it does give me more confidence and more confidence means more fish.
