patrick reif
what's YOUR "perfect" jig for the style of fishing you do? Just curious. This isn't a serious thread, just a bullsheet post. It should be treated as such. Mine...3/16oz football or shakeyhead finesse jig hand tied with natural colors representing a craw and a super active chunk. I fish shallow rocky rivers for smallies and this seems to work better than heavier rigs. I prefer wire weedguards to fiber. Personal preferance The hook should be an Owner 2/0 bln. The hook in the picture is actually a Mustad BLN, but I operate on a budget while still wanting a good hook. I'm still new to the jig game and want as many differant ideas as i can get from the old salts. Love to see your work Edited September 5, 2010 by patrick reif
basskat
I don't have the perfect jig. Have several different molds and they're all the "perfect jig" in the right situation. Same with the skirt, prefer natural skirts in clear water and darker skirts in stained to muddy water. Had rather use a 3/8 oz in most situations but go lighter or heavier when conditions dictate it. Flatfish
I'm going to have to agree with basskat on this one. I'll throw all different sizes, colors, and head shapes based on what the conditions dictate. About the only thing thats certain for me is that if I'm night fishing, there's a 95% chance the major color is black or dark blue and if I'm skipping docks I prefer the arky head. smalljaw
I agree with basskat and Flatfish, the perfect jig is the one you use depending on the situation, I like the football jigs for the river and 2 lakes that I fish that have areas of hard bottomwith no grass, but were grass or weeds are present I hate the football jig so it really depends on the conditions and situation. Ogajiga
My mentor John McK in PA has caught a variety of species from bluegill to 30#+ catfish on the same jig. Its a 1/24 #8 VMC ballhead zonker jig on 4# mono. I haven't tried it yet because 4# gear is too light for ruff ocean conditions here in Puna. And, I'm not interested in looong EZduzit battles. bassmanatcs
Nice looking jig Patrick, I would throw that! My favorite is a 5/16 jig in PB & J or straight up brown with a Jackall Cover Craw for reservoir smallies. Also works equally well for largemouth. Backwater4
My go to jig is a: 1/8 football, single coated cable guard, 2/0 Mustad BLN flat eye w/ 40 strand (custom brown orange silicone skirt) wire tied w/ stainless wire and a tiny craw trailer. Next: 1/4 football, fiber guard, 3/0 Mustad BLN flat eye, all black Like others said, thats what I prefer, not what I might use if conditions dictate something different.
