Long Lake Lures
what would cause a spinnerbait to run on it's side? i bought some diy baits ( 5/8 oz.) added a skirt and a #5 indiana blade and they want to run a little sideways. I have seen this in the past, usually with the wider blades like the indiana or colorado. I think it may have something to do with the water pressure that the spinning blade exerts on the body of the bait. Sorry I have not come up with a solution yet. Musky Glenn
Spinner baits need tuning ever once in a while. Which ever side the blades lean to is the direction you bend the wire arm to correct this tilt. The line tie, hook and blade arm should be in a straight line when looked at from front or back. smalljaw
The number one cause of "roll over" on a spinnerbait is incorrect head and blade size. A lot of people like a big blade for vibration and lots of flash and it is ok but you need to reel the bait slower, the torque from the big blade flexes the wire and gives off vibration but the wire will only flex so far and when that point is reached you get roll over. The other reason which may be your problem since a #5 indiana is ok for a 5/8oz bait, is alignment, look at the bait straight on and make sure the head, hook and blade arm are all in line, a lot of times the wire coming from the head gets bent to one side and if this happens all the torque created by the blade is forced on one side of the bait and will make it roll over. I agree with smalljaw. The bait doesn't appear to be over-bladed as a #5 IN on a 5/8ths head should be perfectly fine. Check the alignment, that is the likely issue. You can also shorten the arm, which will take some of that away as well. Tim
JSC
Ditto The Alignment as stated ... Just 2 more cents worth ... Dont be afraid to "Mess" with the Wire to tune a spinner bait both top and bottom .. up, down, left and right, closer together, further apart there is a point with any spinner bait that you can make it run true unless it is really over powered by a big blade. As stated by other responses the straight alignment of the wire with the head is critical . Make sure your swivel is turning freely also . I have had brand new ball bearing swivels out of the package hang up and not spin properly and cause problems. Opening up the wire (bending the blade arm up and away from the hook) will also stabilize a spinnerbait that wants to roll or lean to one side .........Jigmeister
